I just wish they'd turn off the dark.
Yeah. I preferred the older, more slowly paced battles where there was usually fewer ships involved and they were more like naval or submarine battles. You could actually follow what was happening and there was more tension.FWIW I'd say both scenes exemplify what I think of as the annoying Star Wars-ification of Trek, with lots of close-quarters space combat, sound and big fiery explosions in space, and utter disregard of the actual power of the weapons involved (not to mention the existence of shields) in favor of whatever looks cool and dramatic.
STD definitely is more advanced. It just has this filter enabled that kinda washes everything out. Everything is kinda blurry/over saturated, can't really describe it. Photoshop/film buffs chime in here. It also doesn't help that we are seeing this in HD (1080p) resolution only. If/when 4K blu-rays and/or 4k streaming with HDR comes out we'll be able to see much more detail in each scene and appreciate it more. Also with 8k TVs what will be starting to come out by EOY, I hope we'll see STD in 8k quality before too long (does anyone know if it's been confirmed if they film in in 8k, or is it standard 4k?)
At least none of it's as bad as the opening scene of the latest Star Wars film! Gravity bombs in space? Ships "sinking" after they're hit? I was grimacing through the whole thing...Yeah. Not quite as bad in my opinion since they were in Coruscant's upper atmosphere.Or the wind shear in the opening space battle of Revenge of the Sith.
Yikes, obviously you're a fan of bleeding-edge home theater tech! For my money, I'm inclined to believe the analyses I've read saying that at optimum viewing distances, the average human eye literally cannot distinguish a 1080p image from a 4k image, and the whole thing is more about marketing than actual improvements to the viewing experience.
just because you're a dude you have to like technology?it's right there part of my name
I'm pretty sure he means the IT partjust because you're a dude you have to like technology?
oh...OH! all that time I read that as 'it', rather than I.T., well in that case I guess he's not a male it girlI'm pretty sure he means the IT part
IMO (and including 'The Expanse') all current shows are on about the same level as VFX go. Nothing done by "The Oville' VFX team stands out as above anything else, and hell, on occasion they've just had the ships 'hanging there' firing at each other (probably trying to ape the various Trek effects from the 1990ies as that is a style choice they seem to be going for.)Is it a good time to mention the awesome effects in Orville, or the decent stuff in Dark Matter? (The most recent thing to do the instant travel shtick that DSC adds odd spinner things to.)
Nothing from any of these shows stands out to me as 'jaw dropping/amazing'. As long as the SFX are used to serve whatever story is being told, and complement said story. That's all I care about. YMMV.
