Vista automatic update

Yeah Im experiencing problems after last weeks updates as well. For the first time my system is locking up. No BSOD situation, but damned close. So right now Im backing up the entire hard drive. I really need to invest in a good imaging package though and online storage. Any suggestions?

Norton Ghost used to be good but it blows chunks now (hmm that could be said about most Norton branded products these days).

Acronis seems the the latest in thing for disk imaging and seems to be well thought of. Hell v11 even allows you to backup virtual windows installs on OS X running Parallels.

Have a client who uses and it works without a hitch. Even recognises the RAID-0 config in his Sony Vaio (network and harddisk controllers can be an area where these programs can fall over big time).

Can backup to another partition, external drive or across a network.

You can download a 15 day trial version from www.acronis.com.

YOu can also get a Linux version and if you've got the dosh, versions supporting Windows Server.

The word from Microsoft:

Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes.

But Microsoft is still sending out the e-mails to partners, MCPs, technet subscribers were they can download SP1 for Vista.

So while media outlets have carried the stories about SP1 being pulled from auto update it's not sending out advisories about the problems.

The other issue is that putting in the update into auto update is a bad move. There are still a lot of users around the place on small download limits and or slow connections.

When you're talking about a 500Mb service pack it's not a small download.
