Virgin 1 goes 24 hours on Freeview

According to Digital Spy Virgin 1 goes 24 hours on Freeview from 20th May, and the Plus 1 version is also joining.
From Digital Spy

Virgin Media Television's flagship entertainment channel Virgin1 will broadcast 24 hours a day on Freeview from May 20.

The channel, which presently only broadcasts for 12 hours per day on the digital terrestrial platform, will remain on channel 20 but because it is moving from multiplex D to a new 24 hour slot on SDN multiplex A, some viewers will need to perform a "rescan" on their Freeview device after the move. A new one hour timeshift, Virgin1+1, will broadcast on the existing 12 hour multiplex D slot, but no electronic programme guide number has been confirmed yet.

"This is great news," said Jonathan Webb, executive director of Virgin Media Television. ". Ever since we launched Virgin1, we’ve been itching to give Freeview viewers more of what they love. I’m delighted that they will now be able to satisfy their appetite for up-front entertainment throughout the day, and catch up with their favourite shows an hour later during peak times."

It'll be ok for those daytime Star Trek repeats at least.

Wow! 24 hours a day of Danny Dyer's Deadliest Crims and World's Most Dangerous Blue-Collar Jobs and Hard-Nut Coppers? I'm so there!

Since I've already got all the Trek I want on DVD, the only thing on V1 ever worth watching was Terminator, and the likelihood of that coming back for another season looks sadly slim.

^There's also Chuck, Ghost Whisperer, The Unit, and Criminal Minds, I don't watch any but Chuck, but they're all fairly decent shows.

All the shows I watch on Virgin1 are on after 6pm, so I don't think it'll make much difference.

Any on during the day that I'd watch, I probably have on dvd by now:)

the five channels are also moving, I wonder where the space for the 24 hour stream has come from

we need a freeview channel devoted to old-school kids tv: Maid Marian, and Ulysses 31, and Dogtanian, and Grotbags, and Sooty, and Crystal Tipps, and all those others. :)

Like Dave, but for little ones? :bolian:

But only if they show Maid Marian on a continuous loop for a whole weekend. That was one quality show. :)

Oh, and also Knightmare. :D

^ That would have been an amazing channel. Then you reminded me of Knightmare and now it seems like the best idea anyone's ever had.

Regarding freeing up some space - I noticed yesterday The Hits has gone, will that make a difference?

Wouldn't mind seeing some of those again, just to see if they were as good as my memory says.

One of my mates would probably also like that channel to reshow Mysterious Cities of Gold:)

Blame Jadzia. :p But still, Knightmare was the best kids show on TV. :D

They do old programmes on various other channels: ITV3 and ITV4 for instance, but their programs are either weird or aimed at pensioners. I think my channel idea would be a hit. :)
Hey, my parents love ITV3 - a.k.a. the Poirot, Jeeves and Wooster Channel. :bolian: Heck, I used to watch it too when they showed repeats of Quantum Leap. :D

You still haven't thought up a name for your new channel, though... ;) I think it should be called Ravescene. No reason. :p

The Hits rebranded itself as 4music. I don't watch it much now. :(

Such an amazing show deserves its own channel in itself. The MCOG Channel. :D

Followed by MCOG +1, for those who missed it the first time.

And of course, MCOG Extra, with analysis, discussion, live debate, and emails. Permanently hosted by Adrian Chiles. :bolian: [You've had too much coffee again, haven't you? - someone]

I wonder if they have kept all the recordings of Going Live? Who can beat seeing Philip Schofield routinely disabled with laughter, Sarah Greene trying desperately to hold the show together, while Gordon The Gopher was being mounted by an excited little dog... Then there was Trev and Simon and their 'Swing Your Pants' meme, and let's not forget Peter Simon running onto the set unannounced with his buckets of gunge. :guffaw:

^^ Trev and Simon should have been the next Morecambe and Wise. Dammit. :( :) :guffaw: :bolian:

Anyway, back on topic..... Seeing as I only really watch it for the Star Trek repeats, I for one still welcome our 24 hour Virgin overlords. :bolian:

And Fat Tulip's Garden!

*tumbleweed*

What?!?

Maybe then they can repeat shows in case you miss 'em.
The other week I forgot to watch Terminator:SCC, and found looking at the schedule it wasn't repeated at all during the week. A bit shit, luckily thanks for Mr Internet I caught up, but that's not good enough!

You know it is. :bolian:

Hmmm. We could call it Skool, blending references to 'old school' as in old, and school as in kids.

Or we could name it after something iconic of that era, like Rubik, Fraggle, Troll, Yo-Yo or DMC :)

Knightmare used to be on Challenge TV a lot. Amaaaazing show my youth. Not seen it on the schedules for a while though

Children's TV is brutally regulated and constrained by OFCOM in a way that is utterly draconian. It means that most of my favourite shows would fall afoul of broadcasting regs now.

There's a reason why Tom and Jerry cartoons don't populate weekend schedules the way they used to.

You realise that you cannot, under any circumstances show smoking in children's programming.

Now imagine trying to show the 80's classic The Raccoons to children on TV now. No more Cyril Sneer. It's the same with most anime. Too violent, smoking, sexual intimations. I think Bugs Bunny cross-dressing is probably prohibited now.

Seriously, it would be more efficent to lobotomise children at birth.
