Vintage item question

found a 1984 life size standee of Spock promotion for Star Trek 3 : In search of Spock. I believe it was a Taco Bell promo standee. Have been searching for the value of this item but cannot find anyone that can give an estimated value. Cannot find anything like it on eBay and only one site that shows it says it's extremely rare. This is not a post for selling of the item, just inquiring for estimated value. T'bonz approved. Anyone got any ideas of value?

That's about all anyone has said.. have a baby on the way and thought if it was worth something that it could be a great way to start saving for college and other needs. Appreciate it though!

I'm going through a collecting binge right now (job very stressful, eBay great stress relief) and the market for Trek collectibles is all over the map. By keeping my eyes open, I've been able to put together complete collections of original '60's era memorabilia like "Inside Star Trek" newsletters from Lincoln Enterprises for under $100.

Advertising ephemera like the standee might be worth $100, if it's in extraordinary condition. It's not gonna pay for your baby's college education.

Rare doesn't automatically mean it's valuable, if nobody wants it.

Can you post a photo of it, or link to one?

It's true that collectibles are worth whatever people are willing to pay. For example, the people who think they're going to get $500 for a copy of Spock Enslaved (one of the more notorious print 'zines) are dreaming. I paid about $25 for mine (give or take a bit; I don't remember the exchange rate at that time).

without data points, there is no way to give a value. you have the tricky combo of an uncommon item that is difficult to ship, so trying to get it to the right collector, if you can even find them, is a problem.

Is any Star Trek item aside from a set prop or uniform actually worth all that much?
I've paid $40 for a "vintage" item and just know I've lost money but I still love it.

Many years ago I paid $35 CAD for a set of Kirk and Spock collector's spoons. I checked out the going rate for those later, and it turns out that I got a good deal.

Some day I hope to get the rest of the set (McCoy and Scotty).

The thing is, though, I used to be an avid spoon collector anyway. I don't anymore since I rarely travel (and consider it cheating to just buy spoons relating to places I haven't been personally, unless they're a gift from someone else).

So the Kirk and Spock spoons are among the best of my spoon collection (and are still in their original display boxes, rather than out in the spoon rack).

My view of collecting this stuff is that if you see it as a fun hobby, your only worry is whether or not you can afford what the seller is asking. Once you get into it as an investment, it ceases to be fun.
