USA Today reports that Vincent D'Onofrio will be returning for the tenth and possibly final season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent that will be 8 episodes long airing in 2011:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Law & Order: Criminal Intent is coming back for its tenth — and possibly last — season with former star Vincent D'Onofrio on board.
USA Network said Tuesday that D'Onofrio, who left the series after season eight, will return as police Detective Robert Goren.
Criminal Intent, part of the Law & Order franchise created by Dick Wolf, started on NBC.
Eight new episodes will air in 2011 and are intended to wrap up the series, USA Network said. But a USA executive and Wolf indicated that might change.
An air date for Criminal Intent wasn't announced.
I get the feeling that Kathryn Erbe isn't returning and without her, I think it's pointless. That being said, I haven't seen the final Goren/Eames episode, so I don't know the means of their departure. Either way, I don't think this is necessary. The show just needs to end.

This might be folded in to an earlier CI thread, but I'll still respond.

I could see some potential with Goren and Stevens, the incumbent detective. Maybe Goren becomes more of a teacher or perhaps they flip it on its head and make Stevens the senior detective, having to reign in the newly re-hired but demoted Goren.

That's not a flip, since Eames was the senior detective all along.

Dick Wolf has also signed a developmental deal with USA Network, so it sounds like Criminal Intent will end after this, and Wolf will put together a new show for USA.

I stand corrected.

Whenever I watched the show, it seemed like they were equals.

Yeah, it was easy to miss, since Goren was so much more dominant as a character. It only occasionally came up that Eames technically had seniority.

Dang. I was hoping that they'd move Munch over to Criminal Intent and make him the new lead.

I used to love Munch, but this whole paranoid "Big Brother is watching you" stuff is getting old.

Is anyone else coming back? I know Jeff Goldblum isn't, but what about the other two?

Re: Vincent D'Onofrio returns for Law & Order: Criminal Intent season

I looked forward to seeing Jeff Goldblum and Saffron Burrows have a couple of years on this show, but the stories weren't exciting.

Wolf Films had options to extend the cast's contracts, but those options expired on July 31. So if the producers want anyone from season 9 to return, they'll have to negotiate all-new deals.

Re: Vincent D'Onofrio returns for Law & Order: Criminal Intent season

^ Guess it would be way outside the realm of realism to even think about hoping they get either Lupo or Bernard from the original... :(

Re: Vincent D'Onofrio returns for Law & Order: Criminal Intent season

If you get anyone like a Munch or a Lupo or a Bernard, it takes away from what they are obviously trying to do, a send off for D'Onofrio.

Re: Vincent D'Onofrio returns for Law & Order: Criminal Intent season

Right. And given that the ratings plummeted once D'Onofrio went into the "rotation" system with Noth / Goldblum, and then went completely into freefall after he left entirely, it seems pretty clear that USA told Wolf, "You want a final season? You want some closure? Fine. We'll give you a few extra hundred thousand bucks per episode on the condition that you get D'Onofrio back, or else we're walking away."

Could be a case of they have already sold the advertising space for the show and so they need soemthing to show so if Goldblum has walked away, getting D'Onofrio back is the only way to go.

I say: get Monk. Not just the actor, but the character.

Corporate synergy.

I want to see Monk on the streets of New York...

:)

Re: Vincent D'Onofrio returns for Law & Order: Criminal Intent season

Can D'Onofrio film 8 episodes in a row without collapsing? :D

Why stop there? How about Monk, Goren and Neal Caffrey are assigned to bring down Michael Westen?

And Westen gets reinforcements in the form of Annie Walker, Shawn and Gus?

Someone gets shot, they go see Hank Lawson...

...it's a win win win win for USA.

The new season will start January 2043 because it will take that long to film the episodes. He can only handle about 5 minutes a year.

Plus by then we MIGHT have TVs wide enough to fit his fat all on.
