Vince really needs to grow up (Entourage)

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I've noticed that out of the four friends, Vince is the one who undergone the least moment of growth, if any:

  • E is more than Vince's manager now. Over the past few seasons, he's founded his own agency, represented a few clients other than Vince, shut down his agency only to be work for a more successful one, and got back together with Sloane who he plans to marry.
  • Drama went from being an out-of-work actor who's most remembered for a show he did many years ago to working on a new TV show for a while to having a mature moment of clarity after leaving the TV show that it's time to take a break from the spotlight to figure out his new calling.
  • Turtle became a manager of a rap artist, got together with the girl from the Sopranos, and went to college to achieve his ulimate goal of creating his own business afterwards.
But Vince....he's more or less the same. Yes, he's learned how to drive and he's reading scripts which he didn't use to in the beginning. But other than that and what little good came out of the storyline of him fighting for his career in Season 5, he hasn't been the most interesting character for a long time. I don't know. I'm just getting tired of him always sleeping with other women, spending money needlessly on stuff even after what he went through in Season 5, smoking weed, and acting like everything's all good to the point of smugness.

I just want him to grow up a bit like his other friends next season. Maybe he gets a girlfriend. Not like Mandy Moore :( but who's unincontentival which would add spice to their relationship (I really like that girl Vince met in the bookstore in Season 3:)). Maybe we get to see him explore his issues with his father who's been established as an alcholic deadbeat who ran off on his kids. Maybe Vince and him reunite after so many years. What do you think?

I'm on the DVD schedule, so I guess S5 is the last season I've seen to date but yeah - Vince could be a fascinating portrait of an actor who's achieved conventional success but is haunted by the suspicion that he just isn't very talented, when ya get right down to it.

So far, I'm not even sure we've seen evidence that he's more than a moderately talented actor with the luck of incredible good looks and charisma. But clearly he does care about "art." Under the smooth, carefree exterior, he should a repressed, frustrated, frightened mess. That would be a lot more interesting than repetitive bed-hopping which seems to exists merely to show how his buddies are chumps. This show has gone on for long enough that they could have done a lot more with the guy.

Some of my favorite scenes of the show so far were Vince doing that absurd Smokejumpers movie with the nutty German director. And in the sequence when he went back to the old neighborhood in Queens, and got so frustrated that he threw his phone, I just about stood up and cheered - finally, the writers are giving a character who is supposedly one of the leads (Eric's the other lead) something to do! But no, the show would rather just focus on the antics of Ari, Drama and Lloyd. They've really sold poor Vince short.

Do they ever show any scenes/fake trailers/etc from that Gatsby movie that supposedly resurrected Vince's career?

I so wish they had gone that direction with Vince, Temis. I was almost led to believe they were finally taking Vince down the mature road in Season 2 with Mandy Moore (yes, she may not the most liked of people on the show but Vince's relationship with her allowed us to see him in a light different than what we have seen him in before.) Or Season 5 when he was starting to take his career seriously and beginning to realize that he may be as good as an actor he thought himself to be.

Let's have our fingers crossed for Season 7.
