Villains in this new show

The Overlord

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Who do you want to see as villains in this new show?

Also what type of villains should show up: sympathetic villains, really evil villains or examples of both of these types of villains in the show? Perhaps the alien commander the Federation crew has deal with is sympathetic, but his boss is a real psycho, putting the sympathetic commander in a tough spot. I would like Star Trek to move away from villains who are just jerks, have villains who are sympathetic or truly menacing and sinister.

Ferengi! They were done completely wrong the first time. What ever happened to "They'll find you as tasty as their past associates"?? Do I hear an "alien zombie synergy"?

And don't forget the phallic energy whip.

I think I'd like to see a lot of the alpha quadrant aliens again but kinda distilled and more focused as antagonists. For some of the races I'd even prefer only seeing one of their species at first. Like I'd really like to see one Klingon show up and truly embodying that honour and warrior ethos, with a cunning intelligence and some of that three-dimensional personality of General Martok. But they don't have to be buddy-buddy with the Trek crew and has their own agenda. (Maybe even a woman Klingon warrior!)
I've also longed for a single Borg in an episode, in the spirit or Doctor Who episode 'Dalek' but also like how in Stargate SG-1 when a single Kull Warrior annihilates the Alpha site and stalks Major Carter.
But I also would really like to see some new aliens to be the series villains and maybe push Trek into areas that we haven't seen much before.

A variety would be nice. Familiar would be nice once in a while. Drop us an occasional Klingon or Romulan.

I also agree with the OP that "sympathetic" or what I'd call "flawed" antagonists like Daystrom, or even Kodos and the horta would be good, too. TOS did those well, and they made for some good Trek stories. Those and the ones who more or less matched intellectual wits with the heroes -- not just the "me blow up stuff" types.

A bad guy in a big ship who wants revenge.

Oh sorry, this is for the show, not the movie.

Um...

Klingon bikers who refuse to obey curfew

Romulans who are too edgy for their parents

And the worst threat ever faced by Starfleet: Finnegan. You'll never get his pot 'o gold.

Borg. Looking more like the zombies on The Walking Dead and less like pale guys in black jumpsuits.

I was going to say the same thing. The new series should reboot the Borg and do them right. Make them scary and more like a force of nature. No Borg Queen, no undoing assimilation. Make the drones act more on instinct, and less humanoid.

Didn't DS9 end with Rom heading off to turn Ferginar into some sort of socialist paradise? :p

YES. This. So much, this. Plus with realistic motivations.

And I agree with what is being said about the Borg, too, except I like them biomechanical. It makes sense to me that, as a collective that assimilates whatever advantages they can, they would want a technological and a biological component to synergize the advantages that each can provide. But I'll tell ya, if you want to make them scary as hell, let the writers take full advantage of the implications of that, rather than having them more or less reset themselves every time the heroes come across them.

Vulcan refugees (from JJTrek). Of course it will be not be connected to JJTrek but they don't have to directly mention why Vulcan is gone, right? And not the nice Vulcans from TOS, the crazy ones from DS9, who kill everyone who laughs. The earth plans to build a Dyson's sphere around the sun so the Vulcans stay out but the Vulcans sabotage that.

The disgusting bugs from TNG "Conspiracy." Make them purely bent on conquest, with no redeemable virtues. That would be a tough thing for the Federation to deal with.

Isn't that basically the Zombie (original Borg) apocalypse again?

An AI/machine/robot civilization. Formidable, and almost like a force of nature. Not necessarily hostile, but indifferent to organic life, stepping on it like ants.

They should also have a history of posing as gods and in a twist be responsible for building the pyramids.
