Video of J.J. Abrams + ST panel at WonderCon

For your viewing pleasure, the entire WonderCon 2009 session of J.J. Abrams and the Star Trek panel - Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Roberto Orci, and Bryan Burk - can be seen at

A few caveats — about the first 5 minutes are shaky (until J.J. stopped bouncing around the stage) and overexposed (until I got the controls on the camcorder correct). After that, it’s mostly fine. If I were to have use of a tripod, everything would have been better, but I was stuck in the middle of the huge, fully-packed auditorium with no room to move. Also the movie trailer is not recorded, as per J.J’s request.

Otherwise, enjoy!

Thanks to BIOS for posting my video!

Thanks. I can't get it to play though. I suspect 15 thousand people are trying to view it simultaneously or something..

Edit: Ah ok.. It seems that if I open it separately in Totem it plays.. no rhyme or reason, but there we are..

Edit2: The buffering sucks. I get like 7 seconds of video, then a stop for buffering, then another 7 seconds etc.. I think I'll have to wait until either the connection improves or it's available elsewhere..

Ha! JJ said "Canon". I'm pretty much sold on Pine now, just look at the guy. That's a young Kirk right there.

Concerning canon, J.J. said this:

"The story adheres to canon pretty much as well as the original series adhered to canon."

Oh well...The canon is screwed. ;)

And having said that I'm surprised the new trailer isn't around yet, it's Monday already and we have the technology people. Hint, hint.
Considering it won't be in the theaters until Friday, I'd give it a few more days. :)

And if -- by some chance or fluke -- you happen to find it before next Monday, when it should become officially (and legally) available? Don't post it here, please -- we don't like it when Paramount lawyers bark at us. :(

Remember...

This is an altered timeline where the others are already on the ship by the time Kirk gets command of her.

This new timeline doesn't have to conform to the original. It's new.

I mean, I'd have loved it a lot more if they'd kept the promise to "just tell a story that fits into the existing timeline", but now that we know that wasn't true and that the timeline's being changed, then whatever we get from now on is "canon".

Weren't the deaths of Enterprise D's crew an established fact (canon) until Kirk and Picard went back in time and wrecked Soran's plan?

All I learned from that love fest is that "J.J." is a foul mouthed punk.

I think the other six regulars could have been on the ship before Kirk even in the TOS timeline, including a very young Chekov (possibly in a temporary posting as a Cadet Trainee) and McCoy. Putting the other 6 on the ship first doesn't violate canon; it only violates "fanon".

There is nothing in TOS that could contradict that, so I think Abrams can say "adheres to canon" and actually mean it without resorting to alternate timelines for an explanation.

I'm still not convinced that alternate timelines will play a huge role in why people's histories are "seemingly" different in this film, because I don't think people's histories will in fact be that different (well, they may be different than "fanon" but they may not be contradictory to canon).

My god he was just shitting all over Star Trek wasn't he? He hates the fans, he HATES the fans! :scream:

Nonsense. I'm highly intelligent and swear like a sailor. I have little use for social pretensions and like to blast big gaping holes in people's sensibilities. I'm not an idiot but... I am a complete and utter bastard. :D
