Video game Clichés that drive you NUTS!

Re: Escort Missions.

How about when your escort is a dumb, bitching, girl who's just really there to annoy you but if she dies you fail the mission/game and, of course, her concept of hiding under fire is to run INTO the fire.

I also love bunkers/bases/hallways that are clearly marked with arros, signs, and other forms of posting that just happen to laid out in such a way to direct you the way you need to go.

All of your enemies have perfect aim from a mile away.

All of your squad members are total idiots that only exist to get in your way and get themselves killed and blame you for it.

Yep.

Call of Duty 3 anyone?

I’ll also add to my list is Psychic bad guys. How do they always know where you are?

Call of Duty 3 was the worst.

I’m with a squad of soldiers and I’M THE ONLY ONE BEING SHOT AT!!!
Also all the bad guys are shooting forward and I flank WAAAY out to the side, crawl through 4 foot tall grass all the way around behind them and before I fire a shot the all turn around and shoot me? HUH!?

Gawd I hated that game.

I hate the cliche of the narrow ledge that you must walk across and the slightest twitch of the stick, and you're off. Or the jump that you must make perfectly and can't miss by a millimeter or you dead.

Or getting hung up on every little item on the ground. I love COD4, it's an awesome game, but it so irritating when you're trying to get away from a grenade only to find yourself stuck on some unseen object.

The silent hero. it works fine if no one expects you to really respond to anything. it fails when people ask your character a direct question and you stand there like a fool. Link and Gordon Freeman, i'm looking at you.

Don't forget nameless hero from GTA3.

I don't mind this if it's done in true Role Playing fashion (ala KOTOR), but yeah, it's become pretty trite.

I actually hope that when SE gets around to the inevitable Chrono Trigger remake, that actually give him dialog.

I prefer that to playing a character who I disagree with on nearly everything. I'm looking at you Prey! See also, dumb things your character does that you have no control over.

the follow-up ammo glitch: in most games I have enough ammo to kill the first target that attacks me-and then I run out in the middle of killing the second attacker. This is especially true during online multiplayer modes. Frustration, thy name is "One Bullet Short"!

Yeah. I much prefer the silent character. If he/she says something, I prefer at least having some sort of options to direct the dialog. Characters like Raiden in MGS2 make wish for a suicide button. "How can you love me when I've killed people?"

I should be more clear, it's not silent as in they have no sound, it's silent in that they have nothing to say.

KOTOR is a game where, your character doesnt "speak" but they really do. you are making dialog choices for them beyond "yes", "no", "continue", "repeat".

silent characters are fine if people aren't interacting with your character and acting as if you have responded verbally. or if your game doesn't need a strong narative.

if the character says something dumb, well, at least i know what kind of character this is. Kratos, is an angry guy who really needs to relax. he doesn't say things i'd say, but hey, i can get an understanding of him.

Yeah, I bring up again the PC from GTA3 where you play him the entire game, people talk to him -thugs, mob bosses, mafia hitmen, etc.) and he just nods, shakes his head, throws his arms up and the closest name he gets is "Fido" from the daughter of a big mob boss.

Doors that cant be opened, even with vast amounts of bullets, bombs, axes, chainsaws.
.

That gets me too. You have to use a key for this door. YOU MUST!!! Even though it's just a knob-lock, no bolt, and it's a wooden door. There's NOTHING YOU CAN DO to open it!!!!

When the computer cheats. If I happen to get half-a-lap ahead of the computer racers on Mario Kart, they should not all-of-a-sudden be right on my tail.

Enemies, especially bosses, that can only be shot in one place in order to go down, despite you having weapons that can knock off buildings. The harvest whatever in RTS to get more units also annoys me. Games like World In Conflict already proved that shit is not needed for this sort of games, so move on already game developers.

I absolutely can not stand it when a character says "follow me" and they're out of your field of vision and you have to go searching for them.
