Victoria Jennifer Johnson (The Ladies' Thread)

Before I, so to say, actually started my English language subroutines properly for the morning, that seemed potentially way more intresting

I actually slept fine last night. Hopefully this bout with insomnia is over!

Tonight I'm going to give myself a manicure, pedicure, and a facial (I have some nice, relaxing clay masks to use). :techman: Real girly stuff!

I can't figure out if this was the most recent girly thread or not, but I don't care right now, I have a headache.

Anyone else get pre-menstrual headaches? They are the worst, not necessarily because of the pain itself but because they incapacitate me for the day. They seem to always affect my eyes, so that to look at a screen or book or anything for any normal amount of time makes it worse. You don't realize how much you use for eyes for entertainment purposes until you can't, and all you can do to pass the weekend is lay on the couch listening to music. Just make the aching go away!

^Oh, hell, yes. I get mini migraines two or three days before. Every few months, I get a full blown migraine.

Only thing I can do for myself is two ibuprofen, a Coke (real, not Diet/Zero), and to sit/lie down in darkness. I use a sleep mask now to help block out extra light.

Perfect timing... I am about to drug myself into a stupor (Aleve) and pray that the cramps go away long enough to let me sleep.

I get migraines about every third period. This time I have lower back pain, which I'll take over migraines any day. But now I'm getting to where I know they're coming, drug myself up, and wait for the hot/cold flashes and nausea to pass (full body migraines). My sister gets the same thing. And they always come when it's a busy day at work! How do they know?

In this month's Today's Parent magazine they recommend serotonin to help with menstrual cramps - 5-HTP is serotonin and can be bought over the counter. I had some in the house because mr trampledamage was trying it for his ADD. I'll let you know how it works for my pre-menstrual pains!

I wish I could take medication for my pains, and if they get really severe I break down and take it, but normally the side effects of medication are worse than the pain itself for me. I am a total lightweight. Taking just one Tylenol puts me to sleep within an hour, and I wake up two hours later feeling like I have the worst hangover ever. I feel very dehydrated and my mouth is so dry it hurts. I really hate how it feels, so I avoid taking any medication unless absolutely necessary.

Two extra-strength Tylenol will put me to sleep. So will half a glass of wine. It has to be something in the way the brain is wired because it's definitely not a factor of my weight, it affected me the same when I was 70lbs heavier. I don't get the hangover feeling, though.

Writing down 5-HTP for the next time I'm in a pharmacy... I have borderline ADD, so if it doesn't work for cramps it might work for that!

Aleve didn't knock me out last night, btw, I kept waking up. Too hot, too cold, weird dreams, had to pee, desperately thirsty... everything conspiring to keep me awake last night. Except the cat, she was elsewhere for once. :) And no cramps, so at least it worked for that. I need to get sleep, though. One of my sisters is hopefully popping out a baby this week and I'll need to be able to make a 2 hour drive with little to no warning.

Spots Meow, I know what you mean about painkillers, paracetamol makes me very drowsy. Try some gentle exercise, followed by a hot water bottle on all the places that hurt - but Tiger Balm is even better if you have it. Love this stuff. I think it basically encourages more blood flow to the area and allows the body to heal itself.

Regular Tylenol puts you to sleep? I don't think that's a normal reaction.

Well I react more strongly than usual to pretty much any type of medication. When I get Novacaine for a filling at the dentist I am really loopy and my speech is slurred. I fall asleep after a small amount of alcohol intake as well. I just accept the fact that my body doesn't want these things in it.

That sucks. I hope you find something that works! I don't know if this will make a difference, but I've been using a program that changes the lighting on my computer at night. Maybe it would be beneficial to you too? It's called f.lux.

^That's such an interesting program! I've never seen anything like that before, but it's a good idea.

I don't get too worried about medications because it's really only once a month that I get these headaches. And since I have been on birth control I don't have cramps anymore, or very rarely at least, so in total I consider myself pretty lucky.

I sympathise with you ladies. I've reached the point where gouging my ovaries out with a plastic spoon seems a feasible option. I get not just terrible PMS, including migraines and extreme exhaustion, but I sometimes feel the same when I ovulate, so I have double the fun every month. :vulcan: I've been to the doctor a few times and I was started off on vitamin B6 and given migraine meds, but it's not enough. Apparently the next step is to put me on the combination pill, which means monitoring me for blood clots due to my age and weight. I'd rather have my ovaries removed and go on estrogen. A friend of mine had a hysterectomy in the fall and says the estrogen she's taking has made her feel better than she has for years, so it sounds tempting. I know it sounds radical, but I'm 42 and am most definitely not having any more kids, and I'm tired of being bedridden for several days per month.

That happens to me too. I suddenly get really cranky and shouting at the kids and I'm :wtf: it's only been two weeks!

If this happened to men, the entire freaking planet would grind to a halt twice a month, wouldn't it? ;)

^^ Are you kidding? I once ran my Midwifery Service from the ER while suffering from a kidney stone and being pumped full of Demerol. The next day I walked across campus, had a lithotripsy and then went back to work (for a couple of hours, anyway). :mallory:

With all due respect to RJD and his kidney stones of awesomeness, I tend to find the typical male response of Oh, yeah? Well, ... we have pain and discomfort occasionally, too! quaintly amusing.

I will never forget hearing a man say, in complete seriousness, that his sciatica pain (which he had had a few times in his life) was "FAR" worse than labor pain. He said this in front of his wife who had had 3 horrific 36 hour labors which he was present at. They are divorced now.
