Vic Fontaine

So, I'm watching all Star Trek in order, episode by episode, from the very beginning for the first time. I'm currently on DS9 (10 episodes remain in Season 7). I watched "Badda-Bing Badda-Bang" tonight and I thought that it would be cool if James Darren showed up at a Trek Convention and sang a few tunes as "Vic Fontaine." I know he's 71 now, but I think he would get a warm welcome. Does anyone know if he ever appeared at a convention before?

My husband and I are trying to work our annual Vegas vacation to coincide with next year's convention (August 6-10, 2008), so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

My husband is the reason I started watching Star Trek. He was always really into it (owning all of the DVDs), and, to be honest, I was always of the opinion that it was for nerds. But now I am proud to call myself a fan of Star Trek.

I'm positive I've seen him listed for attending cons in the past... but I can tell you that he's still performing and will be attending Vulkon (Orlando) in November according to his site as well as playing Vegas in October. How cool would it be to see him play Vegas?

Vic was a pretty cool guy, he kind of grew on me slowly. His rehabilitation of Nog was a very well done story and personal fav of mine...

...and props to LeonardsLady for viewing DS9 the way it was intended...it does take a certain amount of self discipline ya know.

Thanks for the info, phrog! I checked out his website and I couldn't believe he played a free show (for seniors) yesterday within a couple of hours of where I live! Darn! I'm glad to see he's still playing and I checked out some of the more recent pics on his website and he is still looking good!

anti-matter--“It’s Only A Paper Moon” is one of my husband’s favorite episodes too. And you are so right about self-discipline. When I first began watching TOS, all I could think about was that there were 4 more series to watch…it was overwhelming. But it is definitely worth it. My husband gets to rediscover the series and watch me enjoy it for the first time, so it’s all good.

Well done Mr. Mack. It's incredible that this episode was carried by 2 secondary characters. That was one of the great things about DS9. We know more about people like Martok, Nog, Vic Fontaine etc than we know about Harry Kim or Jonathan Archer.

Vic as a great character -- one of the best of myrid secondary DS9 characters. If Vic and the Doctor met, would they be friends, I wonder?

I could see Vic and Bashir hanging out. They both have an aura of coolness and intrigue around them. Vic's is genuine (then again, he is a hologram). Bashir likes to think he's cool as evidenced by his holosuite adventures: secret agent, fighter pilot, Viking, etc. However, I think Bashir lacks a little self-confidence in the real world due to his struggles with his genetically-enhanced intelligence and his lost opportunities with Jadzia.

I believe Who_Trek was not talking about Bashir, but rather another character from one of the other series. Since you've seen up to only DS9 so far, I won't go into any more detail than that.

However, had he been referring to Bashir, your response is very detailed and well thought out. If I were grading it, I'd give it an A+.

I agree with Gary Mitchell about how DS9 definitely let us knwo the secondary characters in more depth. I think that is one reason I truly enjoyed watching it.

And I wasn't sure I would like "it's Only a Paper Moon"
