V'Ger vs. The ""Cetacean" Probe....

Tribble puncher

Could The probes wave disable V'ger? whats the range of it's signal? Could V'ger destroy the Probe if it were broadcasting? (I'm guessing it could render V'Gers plasma energy balls inert, or could it? Spock did say it was an unknown form of plasma energy.) I dunno why, but I've been thinking about that one all day.

V'Ger defeats Whale Probe.

V'Ger defeats probably everything. It had "knowledge that spans the universe".

And any contest of power and strength, V'Ger is off the scale. V'Ger wins.

^^ I'd not be so sure about that. V'ger's technology was entirely based on artificial mechanisms, the Cetacean Probe apparently on biological life forms.

V'ger encountered other artificial mechanisms on its route to Earth that were too primitive to withstand.

To my knowledge not much has been written or thought about the origins and purpose of the Cetacean Probe.

Was it just too derivative to have another alien probe threaten Earth, so everyone thought it'd be better just to forget about it? ;)

The Probe was yelling, "Have you seen my deadbeat spouse, V'ger?" The whales finally said, "Spocko says he hooked up with a couple of carbon units and moved out of dimension." The Probe left in search of legal counsel.

The Whale Probe is indecipherable. You can never know it's thoughts or motivations, and it can kill you in the blink of an eye. It's the Happy Fun Ball of the Star Trek universe.

I don't currently own a copy of The Voyage Home, and haven't seen it in a few years at least. So I can't look for an answer to my question, which is: did anyone try to hail the whale probe, or did they exclusively concentrate on answering the probe's signal? If the latter, that's a little weird. Where was the usual, standard procedure "Tie in all channels with the universal translator" or some such?

Get me Starfleet Command.

Starfleet Command, this is USS
Saratoga patrolling Sector 5,
neutral zone. We are tracking a
probe of unknown origin on apparent
trajectory to the Terran solar
system. Attempts to communicate
with the probe have been negative on
all known frequencies.

Thank you, Maurice. Like I said, I haven't seen it in ages.
