Data could have floated out into space and shoved the Enterprise out of the way.

Uhhh,

What would Data push off of? And even Data wouldn't be strong enough to push the hulking mass of the Enterprise.

Look, if The Great Bird wants to recycle a show from TOS then you better shut the hell up and like it!

Plus the P/C'ers will be all over you for dissing The Naked Now :)

I do like The Naked Now...it's actually one of my favorite episodes. Except that part with Wesley saving the day. But I like the scenes with P/C as well as Tasha and 'Fully Functional' Data. And Data falling down on the bridge afterwards. That part was not in the script by the way, Brent Spiner did it on his own and they kept it in there.

Re: I agree with STARTREK11

Maneuvering thrusters could have been used to move the ship. A team of shuttles towing it, or the air pressure in the shuttlebays could have been doubled and then the door opened. Even a few torpedoes could have been launched manually with the warhead reduced and set to detonate near the ship so the reduced blasts would have pushed the ship out of the way.
The Impulse Engines in the saucer could have been started manually and used to push the ship out of the way.

I found the asteroid episode where they lose engine power and a giant asteroid coming towards the ship, threatening it's destruction,as wesley tries to patch a solution in 3 hours to be really dumb.
Fourteen minutes, actually.

All they had to do was to get a shuttle and attach a towline and move the ship out of the way of said asteroid.
Assuming that shuttles have tractor beams strong enough to pull the ship and accelerate it enough to be worth doing.

I MEAN THEY COULD EVEN HAVE USED REACTION THRUSTERS.
And what is the maximum acceleration of reaction thrusters? Bear in mind that such are normally used for changing attitude and will have little linear acceleration since ordinarily you can just use the engines that are actually good for this.

or thrown a large heave mass out.
Perhaps, but they'd probably need to keep Riker on board. What would be the second-largest mass?

I mean even a man in a spacesuit with rockets could have started the ship moving...
What is the maximum change in velocity that a spacesuit thruster applies? Divide that by a thousand to get what acceleration that would provide just the crew. Divide that by some rather large number to see what acceleration that would be if you want for some reason to keep the ship with you.

By the way, since we're given no data on the stellar fragment mass, velocity, Enterprise mass, acceleration capacity of all the approaches you want to name -- you can't win the argument. If ship's resources had the ability to pull them out of the way, the problem would not have been ``we're going to be hit'' but ``we have to do such-and-such to avoid a collision''. For example ...

0.01 G ACCELERATION ON A TOWLINE =3000 KM TRAVEL DISTANCE IN 3 HOURS ...
Tragically, the stellar fragment was 3001 kilometers in diameter.

:guffaw: Also, there are a couple of nice R/T moments, too. We Like That.

The episode you're looking for, was titled "The Naked Now", Episode 3 - Season 1. Anyone up for a fan fic challenge for December that would include the same intoxicant?

^I'd appreciate that more than the tough or depressing topics that have been challenges for the past few months, but I wouldn't be able to come up with something original as I don't know what it's like to be drunk so I have no point of reference. I can't just have the same thing happen. To be perfectly honest, I'd like a Christmas theme, but I don't think that would happen because not everyone celebrates it.

Those are just my opinions, and I think we're getting off topic...

Regardless of the properties of the stellar matter or the state of the ship's propulsion at the time...it was always a WTF to me that they couldn't already use the tractor beam as a repulsor, before Wesley "invented" it.

LOL

What? You want a tool that both sucks AND blows? Are you in porn or something?

Oy! There are so many more things wrong with "The Naked Now" than the contrived manner in which they escaped the asteroid. For example, the fact that it's vastly inferior to the TOS ep it was an update of, "The Naked Time." And believe it or not, IMHO, there are plenty of worse eps, like the abysmal "Rascals," where Picard, Guinan, Ro, and one other crew member are turned into chidren. Now that one really sucked!
