Very nerdy question, but... (uniforms)

For a fantasy/SF event my girlfriend and I go to each year, I'd like to go in a costume for once, next year.

The only Star Trek uniform I'd consider, is a First Contact/DS9 style, but does anyone know where you can get a high quality one, that doesn't look like a longsleave shirt but an actual uniform?

Right, feeling like an ubernerd now...... :rommie:

From what I have read this is almost impossible, if you really want something that resembles the First Contact style uniform with any accuracy. There are some horrible low quality versions out there that you can buy for under 100$. However, these will definitely make you look like an ubernerd who forgot to change out of his pyjamas. Outside of that there are a few online tailors who offer custom made uniforms. But beware, these cost hundreds and most of them seem to be scams, with the finished product not living up to what is advertised and often never being delivered at all.

It's unfortunate because I would like to have one as well for situations where fancy dress is a social requirement. But alas, I don't see it ever happening, unless I become a millionaire and get to hire Bob Blackman. ;)

One route is to buy the patterns and then hire a tailor to create you a uniform. You'll have to buy all the insignia, material, etc, but if you hire the right person, you can get a pretty accurate costume. (I did this for my movie era uniform jacket)

One source of patterns is: http://www.roddenberry.com/wardrobe/patterns

I figured as much, and I certainly don't want to look like the ultranerd in his Star Trek pyjama's.

Thanks any way guys!! :D

An alternative would be to locate a local seamstress or dress-maker (they sew for men too), while they do the same job as a tailor they charge much much less, a half or a third.

Usual they are retirees or house wifes, tell them over the phone you're look for a form fitting jumpsuit, arrive for your measurements either with a pattern or lot of images. Bring the shoes or boots you intend to wear too, they really affect the measurements.

You'll have to buy separately the communicator and rank pips.

Good luck and remember to post pictures when it's finished.

:)

Well, a very close friend of mine, basicly she's like a mom to me, does know her way around a sewingmachine.

Thing is, the only uniform I'd like to wear, is the First Contact style. Does anyone know where to get patterns for that one?

My bad, it isn't a jumpsuit, it a jacket with a turtle neck shirt and trousers, which actual make your task easier.

You might be able to get good results with a non-star trek pattern for the jacket with a similar design, the shoulder yoke panels on the jacket are really the only unique feature, insist that they be ribbed (and vertical).

You can get the ribbed turtle neck undershirt separately. The same with the trousers, Probably should have it with you so whoever can get a color match for the color band at the wrist cuff, I don't remember if there id a color band at the pant cuff.

Take a look here: (the second link has some nice close up's half way down the page)

My mother-in-law made a TNG style uniform for my wife's brother some 20+ years ago. She did an amazing job on it, but she said it was the worst thing she has ever worked on and flat out refuses to make another one.

I ended up going to an Army Surplus store and picked up stuff to make a Stargate Uniform.

Thanks for the extra tips and tricks everybody. :D

Heh, Stargate uniform sound cool too, did you ever find a place that sells the SG1 badges??

Yep, they're out there you just need to google it. I bought mine about 5 years ago so I don't remember where I got them, but they are out there.

My family used to do "living history" events. Mostly we did reenactments from America's War Between the States. It was fun as well as educational. But y'know what I always secretly wished I could do? I wanted to put on a Starfleet uniform, walk out onto a battlefield and go, "Computer end program!" -Robin
