VENOM (Spider-Man spinoff) movie being planned

EXCLUSIVE: With Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” looking to kick-start a Spidey resurgence this summer, the studio is taking a crack at another character associated with the superhero: Venom.

The studio is negotiating with Josh Trank, the hot director of this winter’s found-footage hit "Chronicle," to take the reins of the Spidey spin-off, said a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to talk about it publicly. Sony was not immediately available for comment.

The film would center on the gooey villain who was a mainstay of the Marvel comics and was a nemesis, incarnated by Topher Grace, in the third “Spider-Man” picture in 2007. (The character attaches himself to a human host and becomes as powerful as the web-slinging superhero.)

I really hope they don't actually do this thing. Venom sucks, he always has. There is ZERO need for a Venom movie with him being an antihero that eats brains.:wtf:

There's ZERO "need" for any movie. If the studio thinks it'll entertain enough people to make them some serious money, they're smart to do it.

Yeah, I always thought that was a silly criticism. All that matters is whether the public wants a movie. And we'll find that out once the box office numbers come in.

If it turns out the public really doesn't want a Venom movie, well, there probably won't be another one (at least for a good while.) :p

Could work as an all out horror. Besides I guess Blade (and Manthing, but we won't talk about that), Marvel hasn't tapped into that genre at all with their superheroics. I'm not saying it would succeed, but at least it could be something a little fresher than the sci-fi and fantasy action movies we get (not that I'm complaining about those, either, I'm just sayin')

So they're taking another shot at "Venom"? I thought they'd given up on that. The "Zombieland" guys wrote a draft last time. I guess the talks between Josh Tank and Fox fell through for "Fantastic Four".

It depends which version of Venom they go with really. It's possible they are going to go with the current comic incarnation of Venom, a top secret military program using the symbiote to carry out black ops.

I'm not sure I see the point of Venom without Spider-man. But now that the Spider-man series has been rebooted, this probably makes a little more sense than it did when they were going to make one which ignored Spider-man 3 (and when Spider-man 4 was still in the pipeline).

The current Venom comic feature Flash Thompson as a secret operative using the Venom suit an it's been excellent.

^ Like the Catwoman movie that had nothing to do with Batman. But I still think it would have been more confusing to do a Venom movie that ignored Spider-man 3, if they'd been making Spider-man 4 or 5 around the same time. At least it will now be clear that this is separate from the Topher Grace incarnation.

As much as I like to be open minded about these things...I have to agree with the others who see no point to this film, and I say this as a HUGE Venom fan, and I love what Rick Remender is doing with Flash in the ongoing. It just doesn't seem like it would be worth developing again. I actually wonder if Avi Arad mentioned something about the character lol.

This has "bad idea" written all over it. They should be protecting the canon-brand of the new Spidey movie, and what if they want to bring Venom into that continuity? I thought for sure this project had died once Raimi was booted from the franchise.

That said, I am interested to see what develops.
