Vanguard Questions

Smitty

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I am reading the second book now after having read the first many months ago and reading other stuff in between.

My question is this, has anyone created artwork or drawings of any of the ships? Also, I was curious if anyone had mocked up a starchart for where the Taurus Reach is?
TIA

Memory Beta is your friend: http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Vanguard

The Endeavour was featured on the cover of book four, Open Secrets; the Sagittarius has been on two covers: #3, Reap the Whirlwind, and #7, What Judgments Come.

Also, try to find a recent copy of the Star Trek Magazine stations & starships special issue. It has interior schematics of the Sagittarius.

Doug Drexler has images if the station on his site in the pocket books category. I thought there were renderings of the Archer class there but couldn't find them just now.

Thanks. Just found that out myself. Now I have to figure out how to get back issues.

Any idea if a Vanguard box set or some other collector's edition might be released after Storming Heaven?

If you have Star Trek Star Charts, turn to page 37. The Taurus Reach is basically the blue and purplish stuff between Tholian and Klingon territories (barely visible as the tinge of red on the right-hand edge), starting maybe around where the UFP seal is on that page and extending out from there. (The map represents the 24th-century state of affairs, so presumably UFP territory didn't spread quite so far yet as of the 2260s.)

Not to stray off the topic of Vanguard, but has there been any concept art released of what the Kinshaya look like? The preview of the new Typhon Pact novella describes them as gryphons. I haven't read A Singular Destiny, where I imagine they are described in more detail. But I would like to know if there are any detailed drawings or sketches of them.

^A Singular Destiny only provides limited detail about the Kinshaya's appearance. The most detailed description to date is in The Struggle Within and hasn't been published yet.

Does anyone have any idea what Daedalus-class ship that is on the cover of What Judgments Come with the Sagittarius? At first I just assumed it was the Lovell but that doesn't look like the right registry number. Is that NCC-189? That would make it the U.S.S. Archon. I'm not exactly sure what the registry is but I'm fairly certain it isn't NCC-470.

Isn't there a picture of a Kinshaya in FASA's old Klingon booklet?

And I have a question: Is the space station in TOS-R "The Ultimate Computer" meant to be the Vanguard station? I know the scale's a bit off but.... that's Star Trek;)

The cover image on Memory Beta is an early render. The final render has the correct registry number and name.

The Kinshaya from FASA have nothing in common with the ones in the books other than fighting Klingons and the name. Not similar in apperance at all. Pity. They had a rough look but something that could have been refined. The griffins just don't grab me. I suppose because they'd looked like bipedal, headless bats for so much longer.

I seem to recall someone (Mike Okuda?) saying that they scaled the station down so the ships wouldn't look too small next to it. I wouldn't imagine that it's the same station. Space is a pretty big place after all.

No, it's presumably meant to be a different station of a similar class (but half the linear size/one-eighth the volume). After all, in dialogue it's called "the space station," whereas Vanguard would be called a starbase.

Isn't "starbase" a designation, like "flagship"? Vanguard is still a space station just like the Enterprise-D is still a starship. So "the space station" should be a perfectly valid way for Kirk to describe it.

Not that I'm bothered either way - I haven't even started Vanguard yet, but after seeing the TOS-R episode the other day I was curious as to whether "The Ultimate Computer" was worked into one of the books as a crossover.

For what it's worth, in TOS-R the station has the designation Starbase 6 according to Memory Alpha.

The dialog from "The Ultimate Computer" simply refers to the starbase as "the space station," however, based on information obtained from Michael Okuda, the CGI model of the remastered edition was labeled as "Starbase 6", but was not entirely visible on screen.

We briefly considered it, but decided against it.
