Vanguard: opinions?

I never payed any attention to Star Trek Vanguard, because at the point it came out, my interest in Trek Lit was winding down.

But now, with a renewed interest, I'm starting to get interested, and was wondering what the general opinion is.

Vanguard was what got me back into TrekLit after about a ten-year hiatus. Personally, I love the Vanguard series and can't wait for the two new titles that are scheduled for this year.

I find the story engaging I really love getting to read of adventures going on in another part of the universe during a time-period I thought I was already familiar with. You get to occasionally meet some old characters but most are new to TrekLit.

From what I've read myself and from comments I've heard from others, Vanguard is one of the high points of TrekLit to come out in many years.

Give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

It's a good series with interesting characters. I'd generally give it a 7/10.

This is literally the WORST thing I've ever seen anyone post about Vanguard.

Most people, including myself, are in the "10/10 best thing in TrekLit hands down" crowd.

Vanguard is outstanding. There's no better series in Trek lit right now, in my opinion. The best original characters, the best arc story... it's just the best, period. Before I started reading it, someone described it to me as being a Star Trek series if it were run on HBO or Showtime. I agree with that for the most part. It's the most "adult" series running.

Highly recommended. I'd give it a 9.5/10 in general.

Agree 100% with everything you wrote. My situation exactly. Vanguard is some of the best TrekLit going.

I just finished re-reading Reap the Whirlwind, and will gladly add my praise to the above. The Vanguard series, and in particular the first three books, is some of the best work TrekLit has ever produced. Gripping events, strong character work and engaging world building. The fact that the end of Reap the Whirlwind still sends shivers down my spine on the 3rd time through it should speak for itself. ;)

I have read the first three and enjoyed them all very much. If not for the fact that am overwhelmed with things to read I would buy the fourth book and read it right away.

Vanguard is the best damned Trek out there right now. Read it. Read it now.

The worst thing about Vangaurd is there are only 5 of them.
I agree 100% with all of these posts. Luckily there will be only 5 until June, when we get #6 (which has either 3 or four individual stories) and November when we get #7. And we can't forget The Black Flag, the MU story from '09's Shards and Shadows anthology.

Wow, never knew it had so much fans.

Well, I'm convinced. I need to get through Destiny and Typhon pact first, but then it's Vanguard for me. I was planning on reading Titan, but felt like I needed a break from the 24th century and read something different. The only TOS book I've ever read was How Much For Just The Planet and a part of The Brave And The Bold.
So I'm looking forward to reading some more material set in the TOS area.

I was never much of a fan of the original Star Trek, its characters, or its setting (I had seen most of the original ST movies, and knew the characters, but, for me, the most interesting parts of the original ST and its setting were the Klingons), but that changed when I read Vanguard; the series really made me pay attention to the TOS crew and their exploits (as per their appearance in the first novel), and gave me a new appreciation for the 23rd century setting of said exploits. I have yet to read Precipice, but the first four novels in the series constitute some of my favorite Trek fiction that I've ever read, so you should definitely give it a shot, which it now sounds like you will.
