Vanguard: Field Scouts

A friend and I are looking to start up an RP set on an Archer-Class ship in the 2260s, but we're having difficulties with pinning down just what Field Scouts do--particularly when the ship is in transit.

I've read a couple of the Vanguard books, but can't seem to recall much about them. On a planet then their role is clear, but what else does their job include during the time they aren't scouting planets or providing security?

They are part of the ship's security detachment, and they might have scientific specialties that let them work from the ship in transit, such as astrocartography, etc. Because of the small crew size on the Archer-class scouts, all the personnel are trained for multiple ratings (specialties).
