Vancouver Olympics Discussion

That was the daintiest DQ I've seen in men's 500m.

Well, Ohno's probably fired up for the relay now.

And in the meantime, Reutter picks up a silver in the women's 1000m (which NBC is not showing live).

Ohno didn't even celebrate, he knew what he had done.

The TSN anchor said that Ohno felt that his DSQ was a decision made by a Canadian official to get two Canadians on the podium...

Well, the team managed not to blow it. Quite a Slovak recovery in the final minutes of the game.

That speed-skating relay was incredible; the amount of choreography/coordination required, yeesh.

We're now #3 for medals (and we have the most golds; oddly, Germany (#2) also has more golds than the US (#1) right now).

Also in terms of the medal count, men's hockey and curling should get us two more medal of one colour or another, which brings us to 23, one short of the record 24 we got in Turin; so the question is whether we can tie or beat that record.

Yup, we will, unless something drastic happens. Currently:

1. We're sitting 2 and 6 after the first two runs of the four man bobsled.
2. We have a team in Final A of the men's team pursuit in long track speed skating and they set the Olympic record in the semifinal today.

And there's also a few guys in the mens' Parallel Giant Slalom snowboard event tomorrow.

The men's relay might actually redeem themselves for their sloppy performance at these Games! Else, there's no tying the Soviets.

Isn't there more than one official? Don't they have to have consensus?

If the women win (10 minutes left to hold on to their 2-0) this will give the men a boost :D

Saw the game live, just got home. Awesome game, the energy in the building was amazing. Szabados was a fucking WALL, what a glove!!

Has anybody heard about the "controversy" of Canada's women's team celebrating at centre ice an hour after all the fans had left the building? Seems like people are making a mountain out of a mole hill to me.
I don't see the problem. They were just celebrating their victory. I have a bit of a problem with how the U.S. women reacted. I know they were disappointed, but did they all have to look like they were sucking on lemons when they received their silver medals?
That goalie near the end of the US line (sorry dont know her name) seemed to get how good a silver medal is. Her happy reaction saved it, the whole audience appreciated her for it. Good for her.

The US team got more gracious as they went down the line. The whole arena gave a good U S A chant at the end :techman:

Canada leading in golds.... good turn around from last week. "Own the Podium" doesn't sound so ridiculous now. Grats to the USA on being better than us at being 3rd best, which is essentially the difference in medals right now.

Side note: was watching CTV news in Vancouver and some idiot was holding up a sign the whole time in dead center of the shot saying "Google WTC7".... good job "spreading awareness" of the "truth"

Yeah I saw that too he/she was holding up another with 9/11 referance later, what a fuck tard.

My feelings as well throughout these entire Olympics.

Canada's image of being humble and friendly towards other nations is rapidly evaporating... in exchange with rampant nationalistic entitlement. :(

Most ordinary Canadians are humble and friendly. And many athletes are humble and friendly, too. But the tone of the Vancouver Olympics can be blamed squarely on VANOC - they really screwed up a lot of things about these Games. And to be fair, Canada was getting tired of being mocked for never winning gold when we were hosting. Now that curse has been broken, things should settle down.

As for short track speedskating... it's basically roller derby on skates, and it's time to stop pretending otherwise.

It's usually good for the atmosphere at events like this if the host nation is at least somewhat successful. I dislike the nationalism around Olympics, but it's been that way for a long time. If you want to avoid it I guess you'd have to give the Olympics to nations that have no hope of winning anything.
I think the Canadians did pretty well in that regard when you compare to previous Olympics - Beijing was horrible, Turin was pretty bad, Salt Lake City was American...

You realize that Canadians aren't the only judges :p

:guffaw: You're joking, right? Rampant nationalistic entitlement? In Canada?

Did you not see the American women's hockey team look down on their silver medals? Seriously? Talk about entitlement!

We're doing well, we're proud of our county, and we are just as patriotic as our cousins to the south.

Patriotism isn't a good thing

My point is that Canada has an inferiority complex in relation to the US, and I don't think we need to. I love my country!

Back to sports! A Canadian still standing in the medal race in men's parallel snowboard!
