Vance's Schematics II

Whilwind Class Assault Transport
Based on a design by Daniel Beringer

Does anyone know if the Whilwind could land? Looks like a giant shuttlecraft, so maybe it can..

Regardless, it looks like it could also make a good transport vessel for hauling colonists to distant planets.

Korolev Class
Based on an 'error' from the Federation and Empire miniatures game

Comparing the Whilwind and the Korolev, and consulting the Whilwind plans at the Cygnus X-1 web-site, it seems the Whilwind's nacelles are too small. The Whilwind's plans indicate the ship can cruise at Warp 6 and redline at Warp 8. Nacelles definitely too small for a ship that size. Maybe they don't need to be as big as the Korolev, but they could stand to be significantly larger.

They're scaled pretty close to the original ratio (I think I upsized them a smidge).. but, you're right, for a ship that size, to pull off the WF 6/8, you should have Connie-style engines for that period.

I guess I have a one-track mind... I think Whilwind should be more configured like a larger version of the Pheonix or NX-Alpha prototypes: a central, perhaps tubular hull, and nacelles along the sides that are oriented to oppose each other.

Of course, that would be a major departure from the original Whilwind design. But, I don't recall that design having room for fuel storage on-board, so maybe the change wouldn't be a bad idea.

USS Overcompesna ... erm...
USS Promixa Class Battleship, based on the Bethesda Design

Kingston looks neat!

I think it would be cool to explore this concept even further, maybe make it more like a descendant of the NX class, with the nacelles on up-swept, swept back pylons.

But still, Kingston is great!

As for Proxima, hmmmmm... That ain't natural!

The design does raise an interesting possibility, though. Maybe Excelsior started out as a TOS or Phase 2 design in the late 2260's or the 2270's. It would be interesting to see one with either extra-long PB nacelles or maybe early LN's. Cool looking saucer!

I seriously considered just NOT doing the Proxima, even though I did the other TOS ships that Bethesda's done so far. It was just way too ridiculous both in the design and in the time period. A double-sized saucer, twin secondary hulls each larger than a DN's, four warp nacelles, each twice as long as the CA's... ugh. It was painful, that it was.

Vance,

Your Kingston is a very interesting design, and it embodies most of what was on my mind. There were some differences in detail I never bothered to flesh out, though.

Please forgive my crude butcher job on your always-inspiring artwork, but here goes...

Kingsview.jpg

I know, it looks awful. The secondary hull I had in mind is a little bigger than the dish-mounted pod from your Tokyo-class artwork. I actually wanted the neck and pod to be large enough to house Warp Drive Engineering, fuel storage, an aft or keel probe/torpedo bay, aft phasers, and maybe a small cargo hold. The nacelle pylons are supposed to be like the evolution later on in Icy_Penguigo's "Federation X-Technology Heavy Cruiser" thread . I see this ship as an indirect descendant of the NX-class, a "light starcruiser".

Again, sorry if my Photoshopping is pitiful.
