Vance's Schematics II

After seeing what DS9 did in giving us the Defiant, I'm inclined to expect that Starfleet of the 23rd century would think out-of-the-box in a similar fashion for prototype/limited-production warships of that era.

I keep thinking the Federation would build them as full-size starships, but of simple maximum-bang-for-the-buck designs. One idea I had would be derivative of the Mann-class from the 1980 Spaceflight Chronology...

...except that instead of the nacelles embedding in the saucer, I would have a short- tubular hull projecting out the aft-center of the saucer, with the nacelles projecting off at angles from the tubular hull much like the Connie.

Another idea would be a "battle pod" of sorts. Imagine a full-size starship, built like a giant version of the Phoenix.

Instead of the ship's shape being cylindrical, though, I'd make the cross-section more ovular so that the nacelles could retract into doors along the sides during battle. The length of the ship could be covered with weapons platforms and shuttlebays. The shape of the ship could also lend it to landing on a planet surface ( a la Voyager) for troop deployments. The shape of such a vessel would also make it ideal for surviving crash landings.

The Haseo and Bader both have potential; you just have to give them different pylon arrangements for the nacelles.

The top of the Bader's nacelle pylons should come out of the main hull at the bottom-aft of the shuttlebay area (or the bottom-center) The Haseo's pylons should originate from the mid-section of its torpedo bay. Another possibility would be to simply merge the torpedo bay pod into the bottom-tip of the saucer, and have the pylons go out from there.

Pods that were meant to be in train didn't have impulse engines. FJ only put engines on the starliner pods.

Hey - how about strap-on engines for the trailing pod?
The Jackill's books featured a "warp sustainer" module so the transport/tugs could haul extra containers, so the idea doesn't seem too far-fetched, IMNSHO. Maybe a small "tug" with warp nacelles that attaches to the Starliner or shuttle container?

I've got a number of small tugs already... so I'm a smidge at a loss as to where to go that I haven't already answered. :S

I can't see all of the images you've posted in the various threads, so have no clue what else you've got beyond the tender. I was simply thinking of a tug w/smaller warp nacelles that attaches directly to the top of the container. If you've already got something like that, never mind, I guess........
