valve to release free game on steam in 2 days

Just yesterday, valve announced that they would be releasing Alien Swarm -- a retail remake of a popular Unreal 2004 mod, now on the source engine -- on steam in three days. Free of charge. It also includes the source code, so you don't need to have Half-Life 2 installed to run it. All it requires is the installation of steam. This also means that like other source-engine games, it'll be fully moddable.

Looks like more co-op goodness, but damn it Valve, you're making your competitors look bad.

So it's like L4D but top-down instead of first-person and aliens instead of zombies? Looks like fun.

I played a few levels with some of my friends the other night. We had a lot of fun. The game seems pretty short (looks like less then 10 levels, though we didn't get through all of them), but it is designed to be modded and I imagine we'll get a few more official campaigns sometime down the road, even if they are just community campaigns made official like they do with the best TF2 community maps
