Starfleet may have sanctioned Kirk's doings, but it seems obvious that Kirk has organized everything specifically to celebrate his birthday as per the doctor's recent orders. And the doctor certainly approves.

It might be obvious to you, but I've watched TWOK dozens of times over the last 25 years and never gotten that impression at all. If Scotty showed any surprise it was a pleasant surprise that the inspection had been cut short so that they could get on with the training cruise.

Once again, Timo, you're reading things into the movie that just aren't there.

Yeah. Things more or less wrong with "Flashback":

- Valtane dies (alive at the end of ST6)
- Rand holds LtCmdr rank (Lt(jg) in ST6; too rapid a rise after the ST4 appearance of the character anyway)
- Valtane holds Lt(jg) rank (LtCmdr in ST6)
- Tuvok holds Ensign rank "two months out of the Academy" (Sulu's ship had been out in the sticks for three years straight in ST6; who shuttled Tuvok there?)
- Kirk and McCoy are jailed mere days after the Praxis explosion (ST6 says it took months)
- Tuvok sleeps in full uniform! (granted that he's a freakasaurus, but still)

And of course, Tuvok remembers the details of the Praxis explosion scene wrong, in the sense that there's no time or room for him to bring the tea to Sulu and then fade to the background without being seen in the original ST6 material...

You also forget the ludicrous idea of groups of officers in rating-style dormitories on a ship so massive that any officer could have their own cabin easily or at worst a TNG lower decks style buddy system for Ensigns (which on the Ent-D would have more to do with support for new officers than space anyhow).

...However, that might be a "ready room" for the officers standing by for the shift, not their actual accommodations. Junior Science Officers wouldn't be needed on the bridge all the time even during their shift, so having them wait somewhere in the wings would make sense.

That is, if Valtane really were a junior Science Officer as in the episode, and not a high-ranking Chief Science Officer like in the movie.

And that is, if this Ready Room were anywhere near the bridge. But the shots show a corridor outside, with the text "Deck 7". So unless the action took place at the Battle Bridge or Auxiliary Control or whatnot (actually not a bad idea at all), the room isn't very conveniently located after all.

One might say that Tuvok's jumbled dreams were a juxtaposition of the above rational facts: Tuvok did spend a lot of time in a Ready Room of some sort, often sleeping in his duty uniform for the duration of the crisis du jour, and was in the habit of preparing the Captain's tea there. And he did share these temporary accommodations with the Chief Science Officer at such times. He just mixes them up with his quarters on Deck 7 in the dream...

Once again, Timo, you're reading things into the movie that just aren't there.

Oh, I'm still convinced that it was writer intention that the inspection be Kirk's way of celebrating his birthday - although I freely admit that writer intention is irrelevant as regards the final product.

To continue on this vein, Kirk does cut the actual inspection short in favor of having the training cruise - a clear surprise for McCoy, don't you agree?
