"V": Hopes?

Of all the shows to have premiered this year, far and away the one I find myself most intrigued by is "V," probably because it has a terrific actress in the lead (Elizabeth Mitchell) but also becomes it keeps threatening to turn into something really interesting... right now, it feels very BSG-paranoid, with V's planted throughout our world and able to pass off as human (only the latter was true as well in the original).

My questions are--how is the series doing ratings-wise? Do you think it has a chance beyond this season? Also, are there other fans of the show out there; I am wondering how folks generally feel about it.

I'm hoping for a resurgence from V, too.

I'm not wild about Elizabeth Mitchell. She's too mysterious and ethereal, which worked great on Lost, but on V, she should be both more grounded as a person and more harried/freaked-out. She should come off as a person barely holding it together by strength of will, faced with the horrifying knowledge that the human race is under attack by sinister aliens and almost nobody else sees the threat.

Maybe the new showrunner will change how Erica is being performed. It's not Mitchell so much as her acting style that I object to. She's playing Erica too similar to Juliet.

V's fate will depend on the ratings when it returns. The infamous post-Lost deathslot will at least give it a chance - it's not being buried someplace like Friday where it will be ignored. ABC is going to need a young-male-appealing action series next fall when Lost is gone. I suspect both Flash Forward and V are pretenders to the throne but considering that Flash Forward's ratings have suffered more and the premise is much more confusing and tricky, V is the horse I'm betting on.

The new showrunner is a guy from Chuck. That's good news since Chuck is a very well-produced show. Chuck's main problem is that the premise locks the story in so much that it's hard to break out to appeal to a wider audience. But a good-old-fashioned alien invasion yarn should more easily find mass appeal, under competent management.

To recap, here are the ratings so far (total viewers and 18-49 demo).
11.03.09 - 14.30 M - 5.2/14
11.10.09 - 10.70 M - 3.8/10
11.17.09 - 9.32 M - 3.1/9
11.24.09 - 9.30 M - 3.1/9

I think it's possible the show can get a "fresh start" when it returns with some marketing, a high profile time slot an a fresh approach. The same strategy worked for Chuck, which has gone from cancellation bait last season to a reasonably strong show this year.

I hope ABC won't cancel both V and FlashForward by the end of this season (or sooner) because they inexplicably decided to put both shows on a months long hiatus (V after only 4 episodes and FlashForward after a few more).

I think V has a chance because all the rumors are that ABC wants to keep either FlashForward or V but not both. FF is boring and should have only been planned as a one season thing in the first place.

I hope the alien lizards have tails. Hopefully Avatar's success will break this long standing bias against tailed aliens on tv.

:p

I gave up on V after the first episode.

The only thing that made the original miniseries interesting was the Nazi parable. You take that away, as well as the time the original spent developing the characters and building up the arrival of the Visitors, all you're left with is an alien lizard b-movie. No thanks.

The pilot took, what... three minutes to do what the original miniseries took two hours to do? Forget development, forget character, forget buildup, we just want green aliens and shootings and floating metal things. Things moved so quickly, I wasn't able to connect with any of the characters.

I'm disappointed that they've made it so obvious that the aliens are "evil" straight from the first episode.

But that final shot in the last episode to air has me intrigued, at least.

I guess I like the coolness that Elizabeth Mitchell brings to a genre show like "V"--she makes it more believable...

I also got a real shiver when I saw that last shot of the last episode aired!

My sentiments exactly.

I wonder if they decided to skip all the exposition because they felt the need to "hit the ground running" and get right into the premise.

All I know is, this is the TV equivalent of a $2 record in a $20 sleeve.

Doesn't everyone know what the original V was about? I don't see why they would spend time building up to aliens=evil reptiles, when it would most likely end up being underwhelming.

I have to agree. People well be upset either way though. There would be both camps: "You did it too fast!" vs "Get on with it already!"

I'm going to stick with it and see what they do. Certainly it can't get any worse than StarChild from the original, right? ;)

You'd have a point if the whole show wasn't boring to begin with. But, it is.
