I'm hoping for a resurgence from
V, too.
I'm not wild about Elizabeth Mitchell. She's too mysterious and ethereal, which worked great on
Lost, but on
V, she should be both more grounded as a person and more harried/freaked-out. She should come off as a person barely holding it together by strength of will, faced with the horrifying knowledge that the human race is under attack by sinister aliens and almost nobody else sees the threat.
Maybe the new showrunner will change how Erica is being performed. It's not Mitchell so much as her acting style that I object to. She's playing Erica too similar to Juliet.
V's fate will depend on the ratings when it returns. The infamous post-
Lost deathslot will at least give it a chance - it's not being buried someplace like Friday where it will be ignored. ABC is going to need a young-male-appealing action series next fall when
Lost is gone. I suspect both
Flash Forward and
V are pretenders to the throne but considering that
Flash Forward's ratings have suffered more and the premise is much more confusing and tricky,
V is the horse I'm betting on.
The new showrunner is a guy from Chuck. That's good news since
Chuck is a very well-produced show.
Chuck's main problem is that the premise locks the story in so much that it's hard to break out to appeal to a wider audience. But a good-old-fashioned alien invasion yarn should more easily find mass appeal, under competent management.
To recap, here are the ratings so far (total viewers and 18-49 demo).
11.03.09 - 14.30 M - 5.2/14
11.10.09 - 10.70 M - 3.8/10
11.17.09 - 9.32 M - 3.1/9
11.24.09 - 9.30 M - 3.1/9
I think it's possible the show can get a "fresh start" when it returns with some marketing, a high profile time slot an a fresh approach. The same strategy worked for
Chuck, which has gone from cancellation bait last season to a reasonably strong show this year.
