United States Ship NATHAN JAMES
One of the latest of the Arleigh Burke-class Guided Missile destroyers, the USS Nathan James is one of the most advanced warships ever built. Constructed around the AEGIS combat system, the ship carries a brace of 90 missiles capable of engaging airborne, surface and subsurface targets over a wide area. Also included in her design is the Close-In Weapons System, a tracking radar/Vulcan cannon combination capable of shooting down aircraft and missiles by firing a hail of bullets in their paths. Her superstructure incorporates modern stealth design which directs enemy radar waves away from their sources, resulting in a radar signature much smaller than that of a ship of comparable size. As one of the Flight IIA Arleigh Burkes, the Nathan James has features not included in the original ships, most notably the two hangars aft, allowing the ship to embark her own SH-60R Seahawk helicopters. Capable of speeds in excess of 33 knots and operating some the most advanced sensors and defensive systems afloat, the Nathan James is a formidable addition to the United States surface fleet.
THE LAST SHIP
The Last Ship is the hit television series from TNT starring Eric Dane and Rhona Mitra about a US Navy destroyer whose crew holds the fate of the world in their hands. While the outside world is ravaged by a global pandemic, the USS Nathan James provides a safe haven where Dr. Rachel Scott can work on a cure for the disease. Led by Captain Tom Chandler, the crew of the Nathan James faces threats on land, at sea and in the air as they travel the world in a quest to save the human race.

So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to evaluate this ship using whatever criteria you like and vote in the poll. “Awesome” means you think the ship is an awe-inspiring example of engineering. “Rubbish” means you think a wild monkey with a crayon could design a better ship. “Meh” is self-explanatory. If we get enough participation this first time around (by which I mean more than two people comment and/or vote) I will provide a new ship for your perusal each week until we get enough for a Final Four style vote off. . I tried, we move on. It’s up to you.The criteria I used to select the candidates is simple: each ship has been featured prominently in a live-action motion picture or television series. The series can be either sci-fi, fantasy or “real world”-set, so there will be a good variety. We’re starting with Nathan James ‘cause it was the first one I thought of, but it’s possible you’ll see your favorite ship in the mix eventually.
