USS Enterprise to be decommissioned

The Navy has taken to naming its carriers after Presidents (next up is the Gerald Ford).

A lack of such retarded naming conventions is why the Royal Navy will forever be superior to the US Navy.
I kind of like it. It gives a sense of organization and class.

The Royal Navy does have naming conventions for that purpose, in many cases the first letter of the name of each vessel in the class is taken from that of the name of the lead vessel. For example the Vanguard-class submarines are named Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant and Vengeance respectively; whereas the Astute-class submarines are named Astute, Artful, Ambush and Audacious. :)

Why must your ships' names kick so much ass? :(

^ Because if we started naming our ships with cool names like Vengeance or Ambush people would whine and say that they are too mean.

Don't forget the HMS Quail, the HMS Porpoise, HMS Orange Tree, HMS Sappho etc. It's not all impressive. ;-)

Aw, c'mon, you wouldn't want to serve aboard the HMS Quail?

The Royal Navy is, to my knowledge, the world's most kickass when it comes to naming ships. HMS Invincible? HMS Iron Duke? HMS Vengeance? HMS Smiter? Seriously, those are all awesome, and that's just a smattering of names from the list I found on Wiki.

Needs a real HMS Thunder Child

i thought the enterprise had been decomissioned years ago and was now a tourist attraction in california. i guess i was wrong.

^ You might be thinking of the USS Hornet in Alameda. There might be others, though... That's the first one that came to mind when I read your post.

That's sad to hear about the Big E -- she'll definitely be missed.

Cheers,

Will there be another? The Navy has taken to naming its carriers after Presidents (next up is the Gerald Ford).

USN Wants To Retire Carriers Early

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htnavai/articles/20090415.aspx

April 15, 2009: The U.S. Navy wants to decommission its oldest aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) three years early, in 2012. Originally, the Enterprise was going to stay in service until the USS Ford entered service in 2015. But changes in aircraft weaponry, namely smart bombs and targeting pods, have reduced the need for eleven carriers. The navy believes ten will get the job done. Plus, the Enterprise, as the world's first nuclear powered carrier, will also be the first to be decommissioned.
It's no great loss. CVN-65 is a giant turd that should have been scrapped years ago.

The Navy seems intent on reducing its capabilities for reasons only they can understand. Hopefully they can turn the Big E into a museum ship somehow, so it doesn't meet the same fate as its predecessor. It really is a shame that the CV-6 couldn't be saved after all she went through in the Pacific war. :(
How do you figure that the Navy is reducing its capabilities?

Correction: The US Navy is naming the carriers for people who played a significant role in the Navy. Carl Vinson, Chester Nimitz, and John C. Stennis were never US Presidents.

I can't wait to hear what kind of crazy stuff happens on the USS Bill Clinton. Tailhook will be put to SHAME!

Well I'll be sending in my letter to get one of the newer ships on the boards named Enterprise. But not cause of 'Trek, but because the name Enterprise has a long and proud tradition within the navy.

Yeah, well wait till the gamer generation ends up on the naming commissions.

-- USS Epic Pwnage,
-- USS Oh Snap!
-- USS Leeeeeeeeroy Jeeeeenkins.
-- USS Permaban
-- USS haXX0r

Uh oh. Will this ship's last captain steal the Enterprise to find his long-lost first officer and best friend who vanished in the Bermuda Triangle?
Only works if a Ford Class ends up chasing her down only to stall right out of drydock cause Enterprise's chief engineer stole the spark-plugs.

Then of course that means the next Enterprise has to be a Ford Class with massive modifications that make no real sense and totally ruinthe lines of the ship.
