USS ENTERPRISE HAYNES OWNERS MANUAL (Part 3)

Off the top of my head, based on 40 years of studying the ol' girl and trying to accurize model kits:

The only was this drawing has any validity is if they're trying to invent an upgraded version that falls between TOS and TMP, but that is clearly not the stated purpose of the book.

My additional crits would be more basic - why does the deck 2/ deck 3 "teardrop" bubble and that long gadget at the back of the saucer (supposedly used to cover the bolts holding the model saucer on to the interconnecting pylon) look like they were drawn by a one-handed chimpanzee using an Etch-A-Sketch?

Perhaps it's not the final cover image and they'll change and correct some of these flaws?

Must be one huge scanner, to handle a five foot diameter saucer...

STAR TREK 365 includes a x-ray scan of the model from the Smithsonian. It is a composite image of the side of the model - minus the saucer- and shows much of the electrical wiring and the all-important support base. Somewhere there has to be an image of the saucer as well.

Not really. I do laser scanning for a living. The scanner isn't that big. In fact its about the same size as the units you see land surveyors using during road construction. The problems A) its expensive to run and I dont think the NASM is willing to drop that sort of change and B) more importantly it would involve moving the model out of the gift shop and into an empty space large enough (say about 30' x 30') where I could run it. I am willing to bet that aint no way in hell would the NASM take that risk.

Now there's a fanfilm in the making: "The Great Starship Chase". A group of dedicated Trek-tech fans decide to scan the model of the Enterprise....but change of plans, instead they steal the model. Cure comedy hijinks as their chased through the DC and the East-coast with the model in the back of their van.

Jokes aside: I'm actually surprised, someone hasn't done a "full body" scan of the ship. Then again, not matter how important she is to us, she's still just a model from a TV show for 99.99% of the people out there.

Yah, drawings like that take a lot of time and salary. Apparently not a lot of research...

^^ In fairness I can forgive the cover if what is inside is better. But as you say it takes a lot of time to make a drawing like that so I'm not hopeful.

I work with one of the guys who did the cutaways in this book and I can tell you they will be very good.

I think he means the dimensionally transcendental 70+ deck Enterprise-A from STV. I look forward to that one, provided it doesn't drive me insane viewing pictures of non-euclidean geometry. :D
