Spoilers USS Discovery (What would you do differently?)

this sounds like this should be a contest/challenge I would be totally up for a Star trek Discovery ship contest lol

I have always liked this study model of the "Planet of Titans"-Enterprise:

http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Planet_of_the_Titans?file=B-24-CLN_study_model.jpg

The hull is white ("70's sci-fi-white" :D ), the saucer a bit bigger, the warp nacelles are much longer, connected to the pylons closer to the front and they are rounded so the saucer section isn't the only round piece of the ship.
Actually, looking at that model again, it now reminds me a lot of the KT-Enterprise!

As for Discovery, I kinda like it, although there are some rough edges that definitely need to be cleaned up. The only part of it I don't like is the deflector dish area; it's way too flat and featureless. The impulse engines are an interesting choice, and very different from anything before. The "trench" area on the saucer reminds me of the Oberth with all that ribbing.

When I first saw the trailer my initial thoughts were "That design sucked in the 70's and STILL sucks now. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?"

Yea, YMMV and all that ....

Not in the slightest way a fan.. Just my 2 cents.

Q2

I read on another site that the trailer was thrown together quickly for ComicCon and does NOT represent the final ship.

As someone on HobbyTalk said, you shouldn't do something like that with the pickiest fan base in the galaxy!

The biggest problem I have with Discovery as is, there's a lot of angles to it that just don't make for an interesting shot. It's one of the big complaints ILM had with the Motion Picture Enterprise (which I don't necessarily agree with). It looks good in a few standard shots but beyond that it's kind of meh.

If you load up turtleman747's study model you'll see what I mean. I do like the design overall, it's just not going to look great if it's shot wrong.

I posed this in the other thread, it's an edit of M's orthographs of the design. I brought the engines in and changed the forward sweep of the secondary hull. I think this would look a lot better.

Personally i'm also of the believe that the swoop itself would look better if the engines could hang back instead of being shoved forward. It's one of the things I disliked about the D and prefer about the classic and refit. I know, I know, those are Enterprises and this is a whole other thing, but there are certain things that just look visually more appealing, at least, to my eye, than others.

Another edit of M's orthographs. I'm not too fond of the way this one looks. Narrowed the engine placement a bit more.

Another quick and ugly edit of the bottom view.

Chief among the edits is reshaping the stardrive section and bringing the engines inwards. I honestly think they look the best under and within the influence of the saucer's shape.

If it were up to me i'd squish the drive section down on the length and bring the engines back so they could hang behind the ship. That's simply because that's the look that I like. I don't know if that would work too well with the completely flat engine placement though.

If the teaser is to be believed, the new show's makers may be trying to re-invent the wheel.

The Excelsior, 1701-A and even Reliant looked better.

The Ariel-class starship looked awkward back in the day. So does the ship seen in the teaser.

Just my 2¢.

I do remember that, it is one of the better interpretations I've seen. I still just think the general concept of a delta-shaped secondary hull with a circular primary hull is a very awkward clash of shapes. The more I look at the discovery the more it is growing on me, but I still think there is significant room for improvement.
:X

I agree that the MacQuarieprise did look weird, in no small part because of this "clash" of shapes. I wonder if there is some way to embed a more TOS-tyle cylindrical secondary hull into the middle of that wedge shape. The fundamental elements of the original TOS Enterprise final design were a saucer combined with cigars and pylons, not wedges, after all.

Sorry, I just don't like the Discovery nor the McQuarrie-prise. Both look too much like a Star Destroyer/Starship forced meld. The new series may be fine but I can't call the new ship elegant by any stretch. My 2 credits, FWIW.

I like the Discovery. It is the only thing I've seen so far that makes me think the show will be different than 90's Trek.

Is it just me, or does the teaser "Discovery" look like a cross between the MacQuarrieprise and the Chronology's Baton Rouge?
