USS Discovery in TOS?

Er, yes, there's been debate about this for some time, even before the new show.

Typical consensus? It was just poor grammar usage, since there's no indication that the Enterprise was in communication with another ship at all. Kirk should have said, "Uhura, notify [Starfleet of] the discovery on subspace radio."
... or simply "Uhura, report the discovery on subspace radio."

The Discovery may not even still be in service by 2267, and the new series would have to run 12 years to confirm it.

No, "note" and "notify" cannot be used interchangeably as verbs. The direct object of "notify" is who is being told. The direct object of "note" is what is being told.

@Dukhat indicated the problem upthread:

Indeed, the grammar is actually good in the sense that Kirk would definitely want to notify a specific party, not just cast the information on the subspace winds (like Archer or Picard in a bout of terminal altruism might do).

Further, Kirk never informs other starships of anything, so we already have a good and correct idea of who is going to be notified...

(Of course, "notify" might also be a neologism on "turning something into a note". Perhaps subspace has the equivalent of post-it walls, with starships always leaving random bits of information there?)

This is funny because the Discovery is now being displayed where the Enterprise was and Enterprise was moved to New York City. I wouldn't have looked that up if I didn't see this thread.
