USS Defiant, NX-74205

xraydeltaone

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Way back in 2003 I worked on a pic for the Ships of the Line calendar, a shot of the Defiant being attacked in the atmosphere of a gas giant by a Jem'Hadar fighter. Some of the test renders I did way back came out pretty well, but I've never shared them with anyone. I figure some of you guys might be interested in seeing them. Unfortunately I never finished texturing the model, so only the top side is complete. There's a shot showing the detail I put into the underside.
The images are also a little crunchy, sorry about that, but I got a little too enthusiastic with the post processing and all I have are jpegs.
I can't post thumbnails, so maybe someone could convert these links to thumbs for me?

Nice. I've always loved how photoreal the lighting on that shot looked. Got any tips you can pass along?

Very nice work, Delta.

One comment... I believe that, based upon your images, you're treating the two "red round things" facing aft on Defiant as the impulse engines. Am I correct?

If so, well, that's my personal take as well. I've always found the idea the impulse engines were in the tail to be, well... a bit pedestrian, and inconsistent with logic. The locations at those shoulders just make more sense to me.

Thanks guys!

The lighting is really pretty simple in these shots, just a distant light and some self illumination with spotlights if I remember correctly. There's some radiosity type stuff going on as well I believe. I think that a lot of what's making it look 'nice' is the texturing which is what's giving it more depth. Far easier to make something with a lot of surface detail look nice; that's the same reason lots of spaceships are covered in nurnies.

If I was going to redo it today I'd probably do it much the same way, possibly adding in a nice hdr image of a planet if it was meant to be near one. Hopefully if I ever get my TOS-E to a renderable stage I'll get to experiment with that!

Yup, they always looked like impulse engines to me. Having them hidden away in the tail behind a bunch of surface details that didn't look engine related seemed a bizarre call.

You used the term "distant light". Are you using Lightwave perchance?

I was for this - these days I use Maya mostly. When I get around to doing some rendering I might go back to Lightwave though, it looks like they've got some cool features in the newest version.

Wow, haven't really seen many Defiant models like this done. Glad to see someone did and looks so realistic to the onscreen verison. Never got a handle with Lightwave myself. Glad I realized animation wasn't what I wanted to get into.

The most normal ship in Star Trek...and there for the most unique.

Thanks again guys - it's nice to get some good feedback on this after all this time.
Helps motivate me to work on my Enterprise model too - if only I had the time between work and the new baby!

Saquist - I always had a soft spot for the flying toilet seat!
