Using Pellet Guns to kill Rats. Good idea or awesome idea?

Cats are useless against rats. What you need is a whippet. I've posted a pic several times before of my husband as Death of Rats with an air rifle. It's not on this machine though. He says it's very satisfying.

Things like these make me think you guys live in the jungle. The biggest pests I've ever seen were tiny insects and spiders. Yay urban lifestyle: I'd rather deal with drug dealers and youth gangs than pests.

I have an Airsoft collection, and a problem with squirrels in the garden. About 7 years ago I had the same idea, even had a gas blowback pistol, turns out any rodent with even a fair coating of fur causes the pellets to bounce off. All I've ever done is give them a shock, a slight sting, makes them run but they always come back.

You get special rodent pellets for the air rifle. They're pointed and they kill 'em dead.

Bet it's still a ton of fun though.

Sort of, we got a masochistic squirrel once that took it as a challenge. It would run away, wait, and rush back again to try and get a few nuts before I shot at it again, it didn't seem to mind getting hit several times. Sometimes it didn't even hide afterwards, it would sit on the neighbours fence at the end of the garden and eat the nut, watching us.

Okay here are my choices for airgun. Advice needed.

Daisy Model 880 or Crosman 760 Pumpmaster

Which is the better weapon for rat killing?

The Daisy 880 used to be a great gun. It was all metal and had good power. Two of my brothers still have 880s that work great from when they were kids (20-30 years ago). It's still the same basic design, but it's all plastic now and not nearly as good of a gun. I think the Crossman 760 is one I used to use at the Cub Scout day camp I volunteered at for a few years. They're okay, but they're kind of cheap. Check out the Remington 77. It's like what they Daisy 880 used to be. It's about the best BB/pellet gun you can get before you get into the break barrel single shot pellet guns. My son has one and I can tell you it's a good gun.

As for you idea of killing rats with it, good luck. Don't try it indoors or you'll end up with broken lamps/windows/mirrors and holes in the walls. If you must do it indoors, get an Airsoft gun. I think a good Airsoft gun should kill rats and will only dent the walls. I know they'll kill birds, so I think they'll probably kill rats.

I'm suprised to read this. I don't know where in Italy you live, but Rome is utterly infested with rats. I even had one run over my shoe while eating outside one evening.

The thing about rats: They're smart. And when you have a rat problem, the ones that get around the traps and poisons can be hard SOBs to get rid of.

Peanut butter is good. The traps I like are called Trapper T-Rex Rat Traps. They're awesome, but I don't know how much they cost. If the rats are tripping the traps but getting away, you definitely need better traps.

The rats are eating the peanut butter but the traps haven't gone off/snapped in a while.

Where is the best position to put the peanut butter on the yellow square plastic cheese thing? I've always put it in the middle. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I haven't used those specific traps, but you want to put a small amount in a position where the rat will have to trigger the trap to get to it. If they can just sit there and feed on the peanut butter without tripping the trap, then you're just setting out a buffet. ;)

. . . Personally, I'd go with a C02 pistol and pellets.

I've been reading about all types of pellet guns online. Pretty all of them say C02 pellet pistols simply don't have the strength to kill a rat.

An air rife that is at least 500 fps is needed.

Dream, have you tried the sticky traps? Like the ones for mice, but much larger? We used to use them at work, and they worked pretty well.

I've use mouse sticky traps before. They've ended up disappearing. I'm guessing the rat is using it as a hat?:rommie:
