Using Deepfake in Trek... Yes or no?

Not soon enough.

They shall never stop!!!!

Also, bring back the biblical epic.

Eeeeewww.

I respect that you feel strongly about the topic. If I felt that strongly about something...

Here's what I have learned in advocating for laws against things like this-people don't care....
That's my frustration. The apathy, the lack of concern

Damn you, you have intrigued me as to whether it might be possible to improve the quality of my fan edit voice clips... On the plus side, I will take some time to watch my TMP edit over the Bank holiday.

If you have a spare 5 minutes and you are willing to download the voice clip "Do you suppose she knows?" (from Miri) from the Yarn.co voice clip site, I'd be really intrigued to see how it performs.
Here you go!

I took out a larger portion from the episode, hoping it would perform better…A pity that noise is recognised as voice.

Thank you! I will check it out when I get home. For most of the fan edit, I added background hum inside V'ger to mask noise or the soundtrack but this line is in Kirk's quarters. I told myself it was the noise of the PADD lol but she speaks so quietly, it does intrude on the dialogue a bit.

I might have been bitten by the bug again. Was looking at some YouTube videos about motion capture in After Effects. You can film your own face and use someone else's skin as a face mask. It may be that thus will work no better than Deepfake but if you upload data points on both heads, maybe it could work. I don't know enough about the process. For me, the problem is the hair. I'm not convinced there is a way to make that chime with head movement.

yes, unfortunately she speaks very quietly.

this is the “old way” of doing it...And in truth it’s still closer than deepfakes to what they do in Hollywood. It requires much more manual intervention but the results can be better, at least for now.

About the hair, many times it’s still actually easier to have the stand-in actor wear a matching wig!

Wow that dialogue worked a treat. I might need to rethink a few of the other snippets.

The line added from World Enough and Time, used for McCoy's entrance, had a little fanfare. It wasn't overbearing but, since we'd already seen Rand, it seemed a bit undeserved and I felt I had to add a fanfare for McCoy as well to balance it out.

I don't think that I want to buy a wig to film 1 second of dialogue. I probably just have to accept that it will look a bit crap.

Well, there is dialogue from the 90s 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rites video games (and Secret of Vulcan Fury, if it can be found) featuring the entire original cast. This could be edited and fashioned into new episodes, it's already being tried:

Nimoy, Kelley, Doohan and Majel Barrett are gone but we could get one more round with the original crew.
I enjoy the efforts that these folks have put together to create more animated episodes. There is another person who has taken one of the Peter Pan story records from the 1970s and made it into a Filmation style animated episode. It does not feature the voice work of the original cast but it is still enjoyable. I wish that Paramount + would go ahead and make these new animated episodes. They do not have to be hour long just expand them to 26-30 minutes. Keep the Filmation style animation. The characters always looked like the actors to my eyes.
Regarding deepfake I have been on record as supporting it, but I can easily see how it could go horribly wrong. Making a political figure say something that they did not say is one of the problems that will probably happen at some point. Also I would only want the original cast to do the voice work and get paid for it .If they are going to have other people do the voice work they might as well use their image as well, and not Shatner or Nimoys. To conclude I say they might as well make a classic style animation version of Star Trek. It would be less controversial.

You can certainly put a layer of Deepfake over CGI characters to improve the likeness but it takes a huge amount of effort to get the lip-sync to look any good. I've never tried it on a Filmation character though!

I would love to see a Phase II post TMP animated series but many superhero graphic novels make into animated form, there are certainly some popular classic novels and graphic novels that people would love to see animated. Novels would require a huge amount of editing though.

There are some great stories regardless of religious beliefs. Ten Commandments is my favorite movie of all time.

There are, and I wish I could watch them as I do other movies. But just like trying to read the bible as I would The Iliad or other epic myths, the knowledge that people still take it seriously makes me give up a few passages in each time, feeling like I want to laugh or cry or vomit.

Let people live their lives. There are people who believe Jedi are true.

But, you do you. I'll be rewatching The Odyssey from 1997.

aren't there libraries for that? I remember a big deal was made in 2000 or so shen one came out for the Quake ]|[ engine

Hmm - Now there is Wav2lip. It lipsyncs an image or a movie clip with the soundtrack. Maybe that's what I needed all along?

I don't have any objection to deepfake technology. When we talk about a franchise, we're really talking about a brand -- a force that guides the presentation of ideas, services, and content. A consistent presentation of key elements that represent a brand goes along with that.

Personally, my preference would be not to see Captain Kirk (for example) again. We can follow another crew on another ship easily enough -- as long as other elements of the Star Trek brand remain consistent. But if we do have to include James Kirk, in my opinion, there can be only one.
