Using a Kindle

Had a look at a Sony once. The largest text size was one or two sizes smaller than what I use on my Kindle. So I'm sticking with it, issues and all.

I like the kindle, because I can place the device in my pocket and thus carry several hundred books that way.

Furthermore, eight of the books I use in my courses are 800 pages apiece, thus I can carry 6400 pages of printed text in one hand.

Putting an eink reader (any brand) is just looking for it to become damaged. That's just a really bad idea. Get it out of your pocket if you want to keep it.

As for carrying several hundred eBooks at one go. The T1 does that very easily. And it even is lighter then any of the Kindles. The light cover (if you get one) does not run off of the T1's battery like the Kindle light cover runs off of the Kindle's battery.

I got a Kindle for Xmas and really like it but haven't taken it out of the house yet. Now I've got a cover for my birthday and will probably start taking the Kindle out and about. So how do you advise carrying it? In my manbag? (Yes, I have one for work) Or just holding it in the cover?

I have really enjoyed my kindle since getting it since Christmas. I have taken it out of the house a couple of times without a cover and it's been fine so far. The only real problem I have with it so far is that the size of the text choices are kind of lame. It should come with unlimited options as far as I'm concerned. Unless I just haven't discovered how to use this particular feature yet...LOL.

I carry my Kindle in my hand or under my arm. Did put it in a pocket once, but that was while crossing an icy parking lot. Needed a hand free in case I had to grab onto someone, and I had my cane in my other hand.

Without a cover, I found that my Kindle fits perfectly in the pocket of my winter coat, but I'm paranoid about scratching the screen, so I probably won't be doing that. The covers for it mostly seem kind of expensive... I thought maybe I'd be able to find one for $10 or $12, but a lot of the ones I saw were more like $35. I think I'll have to do some online shopping to find a better deal.

Keep your Kindle in the cover and put it in your bag when you go out. It's what I do with my 650.

Without a cover, you are risking your Kindle. It will have a much better chance of breaking when in a bag and not in a cover.

Pockets are BAD for eink readers. Good chance of them getting bashed, bumps, and squashed. Then you'll have a broken reader. Not worth the risk.

I definitely recommend getting some sort of cover if you plan on taking your e-reader anywhere. I got a nice sleeve for my Nook which zips up and has padding all around. I'm not a big fan of cases that are always attached, but to each their own.

Found a nice cover for my kindle on clearance @ Target a few weeks ago. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get those screen covers for your e-reader. Mine isn't a touch screen but I feel better knowing it's protected.

I have a non-touch Nook, and I use a slide in leather case for mine. I take it to work in a bag with a bunch of other stuff, so if I didn't put it in the case the screens probably would have been ruined ages ago.

Exactly why I only did it once.

Even if the reader is staying home, a cover is still something to get. It can be dropped or fall onto a hard surface.

A sleeve is a waste of money. A cover is what you need, not a sleeve. A sleeve does you no good at all when the reader is out of the sleeve with no protection. So if it was to fall and hit a hard surface, there would be no protection at all and more risk of damage. Most sleeves are useless because they don't fit the reader with a cover.

You don't really need a screen protector. You have a cover so the screen is protected when the reader is not in use. I have a 650 and before that a 505 and a 500 before that. Never had a problem with the screen getting scratched. Screen damage is usually done from underneath to the glass substrate and a screen protector won't protect that.

Sure, a case does offer more protection, but it also adds bulk and weight. I can't speak for the Kindle, but my Nook has a nicely sculpted back that is designed to be held. Sticking a case on it would just make the thing bigger to hold and not as comfortable. When my Nook is out of its sleeve, it's in my hand or sitting on a table. Sure, I could drop it and break it, but anything could happen to anything. I could trip while walking down the street and crack my head open, but that doesn't mean I wear a helmet every time I leave the house.

^Same thing with me. If I'm not going to be reading off of it in the next couple of minutes then I put it right back in the case. We have dogs in the house, so I tend to be very cautious with things like my Nook, my laptop, my PSP, ect.

Yeah, my wife got my a cover for it for my birthday, which I think provides enough reinforcement and protection to bring it out and about with me.

Not sure what to do about me being the sort of eejit who will leave it down and forget it, mind you...

But do you ever plan on taking your nook out in public? If so, a cover is needed. Heck, I've read of plenty of people reading in bed and falling asleep to find the reader on the floor. Also, there's other people sometimes putting things on top of the reader. All kinds of things can happen and without a cover, you risk damage.

No case, not cautious.
