Dark times for my Beloved Trojans, but I think this is the right direction.

"The University of Southern California will return the Heisman Trophy won by former star tailback Reggie Bush in 2005, incoming university president C.L. Max Nikias announced Tuesday. Nikias delivered the news in a memorandum, adding that he has instructed the athletic department to remove murals of Bush and former basketball star O.J. Mayo from university grounds. Improper benefits taken by Bush and Mayo during their time at USC prompted wide-ranging NCAA sanctions leveled against the school last month."

"Nikias also announced that athletic director Mike Garrett would be replaced by former Trojans star quarterback Pat Haden and that the school would take other steps to ensure compliance with NCAA rules."

Bush really bent the program over and did them dry. I hate that kids who had nothing to do with it have to pay.

Hopefully the pressure on USC (and other schools) will be strong and clear: Control Your Programs!!

Back when this thing first started, I couldn't wait for the day USC would be punished. Now that it's happened, I have nothing but contempt for the NCAA for how they went about doing it. For one they waited years and years before making any ruling. Then when they made the ruling, Pete Carroll is out going on every single media outlet imaginable promoting a book called "Winning Forever" and Bush is still shagging one of the Kardashians and making a ton of money. Mainly nothing has happened to the culprits, and anyone who goes to USC now has to suffer for really not doing anything. Some punishment.

I was going to say I'm glad and I hope they screwed over for years to come... except then I remembered I'm a Vols fans we're kind of on shaky ground as well. :shifty:

Here's a depressingly good article about the situation at USC...

"Pete Carroll was preparing for another day of hawking his absurdly titled book “Win Forever” when his old employer, the University of Southern California, cleaned his old house.

In one sweep Tuesday, USC’s arrogant athletic director and Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy were gone. In their place arrived a long-overdue adult; the school’s new president tabbing former star quarterback and Rhodes Scholar Pat Haden to run an athletic department based on principle and pride, not short-term success and fleeting, me-first glory.

The school’s preemptive return of Bush’s Heisman will tell you it’s serious. They haven’t sent back O.J. Simpson’s, but they want nothing to do with Reggie and the era that he represents."

Good Lord, what a mess. I hope Carroll and Bush are proud of themselves.

I don't see the benefit of returning the Heisman.

As for keeping the OJ Heisman but returning the Bush Heisman... OUCH!

While it's more symbolic than anything else, it's one of the few actions USC can take that does not impact any other athlete.

While I am no fan of Reggie's at all, he's not the only one to blame. There has been much debate lately over the agents involved, the coaches, the NCAA itself.
