Kenwood released a series of CD-ROM drives employing multiple (seven?) laser diodes a decade or so back. Performance was generally superior to conventional CD-ROM drives but not by nearly so much as one would expect as the discs were spun significantly slower than in conventional high-performance drives. Not sure if that was a consequence of the technologies employed or a deliberate compromise between performance and noise levels.
