USA vs Guatemela WCQ match

Did anyone see this match? How could official sports events be allowed in such places? The stadium looked like it was lit with candles. The team was cheating non-stop from the beginning. The elbow to the face was the worst foul I have ever seen. I actually think he was trying to kill him. And while Eddie Lewis was on the field bleeding, riot police had to place shields over him to protect him from fans throwing shit. WTF???

Yeah, I heard that game was pretty dirty. That's pretty messed up.

The Canada vs. Jamaica game wasn't nearly as bad, but Jamaica was diving all over the place. It was driving me nuts!

Pardon my ignorance; but what the hell is WCQ?

World Cup Qualifier.

I saw this match. Par for the course in the Central American hellholes (I speak stadiums not countries) that make up CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football). The stadiums are ill lit, and the pitches are all but full of gopher holes and dangerously uneven. The crowds are hostile, unrestrained, and obviously dangerous meaning the refs are utterly intimidated. They make it clear to the ref that harming him is not outside of their thinking. They throw coins and other hard objects onto the field, and if you are lucky, cups or urine because urine can't crack your skull.

Costa Rica, and as seen last night, Guatemala may be the worst. The players can't begin to play football with the Americans, so they resort to some of the filthiest thuggery and play acting I've seen - and I've seen countless thousands of hours of football - which goes mostly unpunished.

Some of the highlights from this game were Carlos Ruiz kicking goal keeper Tim Howard in the head when Howard was down, and of course, the flying blind side elbow on Eddie Lewis. The most amusing moment of the game was during a corner Guatamala were so intent on cheating and using several players to drag 6 foot 4 heading threat Onyewu to the ground, they left Carlos Bocanegra completely unmarked to head the ball into the net for the winner.

That's the way it's supposed to be (minus the throwing stuff on the pitch).
