US Senate Votes to Repeal DADT

LINK

The draft will return with a vengeance and out of necessity. What young man wants to voluntarily join an outfit that will force him to shower naked with males who have a sexual interest in him and just might molest him while he sleeps in his bunk?

You've got to be freaking kidding me. Because we all know that gay men are serial rapists, right? (Forget for the moment most sexual deviants who rape tend to be heterosexual.)

I get an invalid address error.

But in any event, I'm sure there will be a few people who will not want to serve. So be it.

Many, many others who have been excluded will take their places proudly.

Now...what happens to everyone who was discharged solely for being gay? I thought I read somewhere it's something like 13,000 people (I may be off on that)? I wonder how many will try for reinstatement?

Link fixed, apologies.

"The armies of other nations have allowed gays to serve openly in the military. The reason they could afford to do this is simple: they could allow homosexuals to serve in their military because we didn’t allow them to serve in ours.

They knew they could count on the strength, might, power, and cohesion of the U.S. military to intervene whenever and wherever necessary to pull their fannies out of the fire and squash the forces of tyranny wherever they raised their ugly heads around the world.

Those days are now gone. We will no longer be able to bail out these other emasculated armies because ours will now be feminized and neutered beyond repair, and there is no one left to bail us out. We have been permanently weakened as a military and as a nation by these misguided and treasonous Republican senators, and the world is now a more dangerous place for us all."

Everytime I think I can no longer be offended by fundie right-wing nut jobs, something like this comes along.

Absolutely ridiculous.

It's less offensive if you imagine the author isn't aware of the different meaning of fanny in British English. I always forget it means something completely different in American English. The argument is just dumb and nonsensical.

McCain in particular for being the most outspoken opponent with also the most convoluted, inconsistent, and hypocritical justifications for his stance.

McCain has become almost obscenely out of touch with reality in the last ten years. At this point, his comments on the military and military personnel are offensive. Polls show the vast majority of them don't give a shit, and don't even think about it while performing their duty. These people are trained to handle stress under fire, and the idea that they can't handle serving with gay people (they already are and deal with it every day) is asinine.

McCain says he has great respect for the military, but at this point I think he's just being an old, bigoted, homophobe. Call him a product of his day, if you want, but this is the 21st century and his generation needs to pack it in, by and large, when it comes to deciding the future of the USA.

Yep - he looks increasingly like a bitter old man. Which, according to the people I have known who have met him, he is.

I apreciate Mcains service and I respect him foe surviving POW camp, but he was only in the Navy for a short period of time and is completely out of touch. He has reversed and back tracked on every position he has ever held since losing the primary in 2000. What is really sad is, if he would have won the primary, I would have voted for him.

Don't feel alone about this. I did vote for him in 2000. I also voted for him in 1992 and 1998...He basically did a complete about-face in the years between 2000 and 2004.

Jeez - I can smell that from here....

What complete and utter bullshit.

In 20 years this "controversy" will be seen as the biggest "so what?" issues in history.

Young people care less and less about stuff like this, polls have all shown, and in 20 years they'll be in charge.

All of society is so clearly trending towards more acceptance, not less, of gays, that its almost humorous to see how hard some people fight against it, over something so futile.

I learned of this last night in Chat with Emh. :bolian:

Obviously, it's about time, but trying to make social progress is like slogging through mud with all the throwbacks out there trying to undermine American values. It took a hundred years after the Civil War for the Civil Rights Movement to make a real difference, and over forty years after Suffrage for the Women's Lib Movement to finally make real breakthroughs. Right now we're going through a very confused, if not backward, period in politics, so it's very heartening to see something like this happen. It's a proud day for Americans. :mallory:
