US Senate Votes to Repeal DADT

By a vote of 65 to 31, the US Senate voted to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell. This is a historic moment and a victory for freedom and equality for all Americans. After so much politically motivated resistance, I'm personally surprised that it happened at all, much less now. Another barrier is lowered for our GLBT brothers and sisters.

Fantastic! The last news tweet I saw in my feed said that the Senate had decided to push the vote until tomorrow. Glad to see they decided to just finish it today, and that the right choice was made too.

I'm more relieved than celebratory. It was obvious that DADT should have been repealed as soon as it was implemented and gays allowed to serve openly instead. But at least it's over now in spite of all the foot dragging and bigotry holding it back. Good on the Congressmen and women who did the right thing and shame on those who didn't; McCain in particular for being the most outspoken opponent with also the most convoluted, inconsistent, and hypocritical justifications for his stance.

McCain has become almost obscenely out of touch with reality in the last ten years. At this point, his comments on the military and military personnel are offensive. Polls show the vast majority of them don't give a shit, and don't even think about it while performing their duty. These people are trained to handle stress under fire, and the idea that they can't handle serving with gay people (they already are and deal with it every day) is asinine.

McCain says he has great respect for the military, but at this point I think he's just being an old, bigoted, homophobe. Call him a product of his day, if you want, but this is the 21st century and his generation needs to pack it in, by and large, when it comes to deciding the future of the USA.

Republicans Brown, Collins, Kirk, Murkowski, Snowe, Voinovich voted yes to stop the filibuster, Democrat Manchin went to a party or something instead of of voting; Republicans Burr and Ensign also voted yes on the actual vote; everything else was Democrats yes, Republicans no.

I apreciate Mcains service and I respect him foe surviving POW camp, but he was only in the Navy for a short period of time and is completely out of touch. He has reversed and back tracked on every position he has ever held since losing the primary in 2000. What is really sad is, if he would have won the primary, I would have voted for him.

Joe Lieberman is definitely one of the slimiest motherfuckers currently engaged in politics in the western world.

But he's been very vocal on this issue and may have been instrumental in getting this passed. He gets some points for that, I suppose.

Regardless of how it went down, I couldn't be happier that certain soldiers are being recognized as human beings.

Extend that to civilians too and we'll have a victory really worth cheering for.

It's about time. This whole thing has been ridiculous.

As someone who has dedicated his career to working with veterans, I can tell you there are plenty of good men and women who served honorably, and just happened to be gay. The services will survive, all the right-wing Chicken Little routines aside.
