US Representative, at least 6 others killed

Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ 8) has been shot and killed by a gunman while meeting with constituents at a Safeway in Tuscon, Arizona. At least 6 other persons have been killed, and 5 more are reported to have been shot.

Edit: A hospital spokesperson has informed CNN that Representative Giffords is alive, in "very critical condition." (The NPR article has been updated.)

Yeah, the information is all over the place. Fox says she's been fatally shot, HuffPo says she's in critical condition, MSNBC says she's died, and CNN can't make up it's mind. We'll just have to wait to really find out after the frenzy has slowed down a bit.

That said, this is just terrible, terrible news.

Wow, this is horrible. Still no word on her condition, but she's been shot in the head, which is not good.

Also no word on the other victims or anything about the shooter. It doesn't say if he or she got away or was caught.

My guess is the guy is a right wing nut that for some reason we won't call a terrorist. Just like the IRS plane terrorist from last year, and most likely the bombs in Maryland and DC this weekend.

This is just horrible through, I hope she is alive and will be OK.

Last news were that she's not dead, in fact I think nobody has been definitely confirmed dead yet, but I think 11 people were brought to the hospital, all in serious or critical condition, including a child; and the Congresswoman is in surgery with a head wound. There should be a newsconference within the hour or so with more concrete information.

About the person who did this--we will have to wait to see who this is. But whoever they are, whether they are out of their mind or whether they did this with some kind of frakked-up "political" motivation--whatever BS justification they came up with for this, I condemn it. Nuts, unfortunately, come in all stripes.


Incidentally: has anyone else heard that some civilian in the crowd fired back at the killer?

This is terrible terrible news and I hope she makes it through alright. I just got a tweet that she did make it through the surgery but it's not official and I take it with a grain of salt. I also pray for all the victims.

The latest news is that the congresswoman made it through surgery and her doctor is "optimistic." Sadly, it seems one of the fatalities was a little girl.
