I'm giving it serious thought. I have dreams of making a living selling my handcrafted items online, in which case I could live in any state as long as I had high speed internet access.

That would be really cool if you could do it then, I mean if it's literally half the cost to live in a different state then that is a good reason to move.

My gf and I have seriously considered moving to the Southwest. Either Arizona or New Mexico. Beautiful states. Tons of good birdwatching locations. And very low cost of living.

I've heard Arizona is nice. One of my employees went there every year for skydiving and he loved it.

It's all about getting a job there first. The problem generally with places with lower cost of living is the job availablity and pay for those jobs tends to be lower as well.

UBI is inevitable - automation will either make a large percentage of the workforce unemployed in the near(ish) future or result in everyone working drastically decreased hours.

A surplus of labour of that magnitude will need a lot more than an increase in the minimum wage. Either workers will have to job share and employers will have to pay full salaries for a few hours work per week OR taxes will have to go up to cover a flat rate income paid to all citizens.

Either way a change in attitude is necessary.

Drastic solution, start WW3, cull two -thirds of the population, result reduced labour force....

It's not all its cracked up to be. I've been telecommuting for going on 14 years and while I opted to spend some of that time travelling (including three years living in Russia) which was very cool, when I came back I chose to settle in Texas -- where most of my uncle, aunt, and grandmother had migrated from Connecticut. So I came here in 2008 and bought a house in 2009. It's a decent house, price per square foot is half what it would be in Connecticut, and I don't have to spend a fortune on oil in winter, and there's no income tax. And yet, every day, I regret the decision to leave, and as soon as I can afford to do so, I'm getting the Hell out of here. Schools are terrible. Services are practically nonexistent. Neighbors are culturally and ideologically opposite of me. People carry weapons at the grocery store. And so on. The only redeeming quality is that it is cheap, but after this experience I'll never confuse cost with value.

Sounds like Texas, all right. I know a lot of people who live there, and to a person every one of them who has a shred of human decency hates living there.

They must have awesome Mexican food though, I can't get authentic Mexican food to save my life where I live.

Nope -- even in that Texas fails. Folks here call it Tex-Mex. Cheesy, beefy, beany, processed garbage. A lot like American "Chinese" food, except the locals are honest about the lack of authenticity. If you want the real deal, you'll have to go south of the border -- or find an immigrant willing to invite you over for supper.

ETA: At least in North Texas. You might get more authentic fare farther south.

Tex Mex isn't always processed garbage. There's plenty of good Mexican and Tex Mex to be had in the Southwest.
