US Army to go completely Windows Vista by 2010

I still use WinNT 4.0 on some Navy systems, so maybe let's not knee-jerk and bash the decision as retarded. Compared to WinNT, gotta be more secure, right? :p

I've always wondered if the government, i.e. special departments, can get access to the sourcecode to evaluate it.

I don't know if i would like to employ a system when i don't know exactly how it works and can fix it myself when my life would depend on that system.

Imagine a professional hacker attack which could be the opening salvo of a war whose aim is to bring down your IT net and they exploited a hole in Windows you didn't know about and with the attack on the way can effectively combat because you don't have core access to Windows.

If the army were to adopt Windows 7 it would be another 2 or 3 years before 7 was even implemented. It takes time to both install it on all the computers as well as making sure it can be compatible with all necessary equipment (in the case of Vista, one issue was making CAC card readers compatible with Vista)

It works with Vista, a device will work with Windows 7. Microsoft has publicaly stated that on the matter of driver support.

It's not bad, but it's pretty stupid to be adopting old tech at this point. I know a lot of people in DoA IT (some at the top) and this is a case of the higher-ups having no idea what they are talking about. Hell, I'm surprised that Microsoft (who is a large vender for the DoD) isn't pushing Windows 7 harder because that would be a big win for them.
You have just described the problem with 95% of all organizations when it comes to I/T procurement. The people making the decisions aren't familiar with how I/T operates, and I/T people aren't inclined to move up into managerial/directorial positions. It wasn't until the mid-1990's when people stopped looking at I/T as an expense and started viewing it as an investment.

There's been mention and discussion about the U.S army making use of iPhones in the field, are they heading anywhere with Netbooks?

If so I'm wondering how things would play out there given there's a Netbook version of Win7 while Vista is too bloated for them?

Probably, it'll just take the army a couple of years and a few million dollars to be satisfied with what everyone else knows is true

Candlelight,

We will not surrender to N.K. for nothing. Did you know that N.K. now revisit to do nuclear test in the underground today? That's causes a great grave of concerning, that's threatening to our peace here on the earth. Now, how on the earth would you thinking that would we ever raise our white flag and surrender to them?? Sure, N.K. would like that, so they could controlling us. That is, they never WILL!

I got the feeling that we will go war with N.K. sooner or later.

Other than that, U.S. Army is completely mad when it comes to making the horrible decision to go completely windows Vista. To me, Window 7 is best. That's what they should go for it!
