Yup that's the problem. All anime hentai released in Japan is optically censored, though with newer releases this isn't a problem when they are released overseas. Not so with Urotsukidoji. The censorship appears to have been applied during production of the original master, so in order to remove the censorship a new master would have to be produced, possibly requiring going back to the original materials.

Interestingly, the movie versions of 1 and 2 are not censored in this way.

On the other hand our releases in the states (obviously the DVD kind) are uncensored (thankfully) so either we alter them somehow to remove the filter or the original master copy our companies are sent was completely uncensored. The real mystery is why bother to even make pornography in the first place if it just gets censored anyway?

Doesn't that kind of thing defeat the entire purpose of porno. I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad and pathetic. I mean hentai has better storylines than most porn but it's still not enough to carry a movie or series along and it's not like people watch them for the plot anyway. I imagine there's a lot of reverse importing going on with the laws the way they are there.

I'm a little confused on this point though considering they censor extreme violence in some shows, especially if they related to current real life cases. For instance there was a series of axe murders in Japan around the time that

School Days and Higurashi no Naka Koroni Kai

were airing. Those two series (written before the incident happened) had scenes involving violent stabbing/hacking murders so scenes in them were censored. In both cases the series went on hiatus while they did this.

Actually they do, it's just to a far lesser extent ("Yes, that barely visible 1mm translucent bar is really obscuring the filth."). Of course I have no idea how I could possible know this

What tends to happen as far as I can see is that the censorship gradually gets weaker and weaker over time until the authorities decide to prosecute someone. That then pushes the censorship back to a more severe level and restarts the process of it getting weaker again.

Well as an Anime fan from the timeperiod when that OAV series was first released; the 3 OAV version WAS completely un-edited; but this was the one that finally had the Japanese 'clamp down' on what could be depicted once and for all.

If you watch other hentai OAVs; the Japanese lad always pixilated or 'glow globed' animated sex scenes because there was a law that stated you could not depict graphic sex between two human beings.

So, the producers of Urotsukidoji (when I saw the 3 episode OAV series, the title was translated to me as Wandering Kids) put it out depicting everything -- and were taken to court; and their defense was "Hey, we're not depicting any sex acts between two human beings; one of them is a Demon... (yeah, and it's just a coincidence they have human type genitalia and other 'human' sexual characteristics) and while the case was going on a few more anime producers got into the act and a new hentai genre was born.

Eventually, they (the Japanese) re-worded the applicable law; and thus everything became pixilated, blurry, glow-globed, etc. again.

Mostly Japan but I think Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Phillipians (pretty much any place that has almost instant access to anime over the air) has sort of jumped in on it
