Retro is big with Millennials -- that's why TOS-style boots and mini-dresses are big with young women right now, James Bond has gone back to having testosterone, and cars with a late 60s vibe -- the redesigned Mustangs and Camaros, for instance -- are the new wave of American muscle cars. True, they have nostalgic appeal for the graying Baby Boomers, but the fashion forward are sporting mod 'dos again, and the wild colors and patterns of 40 years ago have made a comeback in everything from art to furniture to clothes.

So, it's ironic that to geeky Star Trek fans, the TOS look and style seems so geeky. Done right, which is to say with a nod to trendiness today, they'd probably go a lot further with the fashion-forward than the staid pajama/hotel/corporate/stainless steel look of Berman Trek.

I think certian cotrols could remain manual like the transporter, but others would be more "2008" It should be a mixture. Spocks viewer could stay or Sulu's.I think the engine room controls would be manual and the chips.The computer voice should be different and not say "working" with a nasal voice. you also have to keep in mind there was a devestating 3rd world war, plus Earth Romulan war , the Phoenix had manual controls and looked like a Saturn rocked, but still looked futuristic. All in all it'll probably look different, but the same and still will look futuristic.

TOS's tech looks and sounds so ridiculous now. Big buckets meant to do simple scanning tasks, fake robot voices for the compuper, printing paper, spiral computer displays. Where are the monitors? Where are the data readouts? Big bright bulky buttons are hardly ergonomic and in no way look like the future we're headed toward.

Star Trek should look futuristic. The tech should look futuristic. If Star Trek is not concerned about appearing futuristic, and is only concerned with being nostalgic, then it's not Star Trek.

This is all about whom we want to have control of where Trek is going. Those who look back, or those who look forward.

Count me among those who look forward.
