Upcoming Publications: October/November 2011

I don't buy the trades since I really can't afford them and still buy the number of books I currently do so I'm glad I can get the new New Frontier novel as a mass market paperback. It allows me to keep reading the series.

But when S&S does a reprint, the least they could do is at the same time. Otherwise, those of us who already have the book get cheated.

^How are you "cheated" if you don't get a new novel in a given month? It's not like you're paying a monthly subscription fee or something. You don't have anything unfairly taken from you if there's a month without a new book you want to read. After all, not everyone is a fan of every series. Say there's someone out there who can't stand, ohh, DS9 -- is that person being "cheated" if there's a DS9 novel in a given month instead of a different series? Of course not. Nobody's guaranteed to get a book they'll want to read in every single month. The goal of the book line is to appeal to as many segments of the audience as possible, and it's inevitable that serving one segment's interests in a given month may leave another segment wanting in that same month. But all they have to do is wait and something more to their tastes will be along later.

There are other books out there besides trek lit  to tide you over until February.
I for one am looking forward to The Sisterhood of Dune.

I have plenty to read. But this brings the total of new Trek books for 2012 down to 11 instead of 12. Given that we had the debacle with the JJ-Verse books, you'd think S&S would not let a month go by in 2012 without new Trek.

IIRC, Margaret Clark once said that January was a rather quiet time for ST and media tie-in books, and not a good time to get publicity and energy happening. (People looking for books at sale and remaindered prices so they can use their Christmas book vouchers?) So it's a better time for a reprint title.

And the "debacle" with the JJ tie-ins is a loooooong time ago now.

False premise. Pocket has been publishing hardcovers on a fairly regular basis for over 20 years, and they always get reprinted in paperback within a year or so. So during those years wherein Pocket published 12 MMPBs per year, it has usually been the case that one has been a reprint. That's the normal state of affairs, not a brand-new exception.

And as you've been told before, an MMPB reprint is a new book for many readers, those who didn't buy it in hardcover. As I keep trying to impress on you, the goal is to appeal to a wide range of reader tastes and interests, not to cater exclusively to a single set.

So there's nothing on your "To Read" pile, and you've read everything? :wtf:

Hell, it's been 6 year since we had a story set 100% in the Prime Universe, so I'd say any month with a Prime Universe story being released is a very very good month. Most other franchises would have stopped doing stories set in their original universe as soon as the new one was established.

Do you mean since we had a screen story set in Prime? Took me a few moments to get that.

Depends, I guess. Marvel kept publishing comics in its original continuity after it introduced the Ultimate universe. Conversely, DC has all but abandoned its previous continuity now that it's rebooted with "The New 52."

And if you're talking about tie-ins and how they relate to a screen continuity, that's a situation where it generally isn't deemed to matter which continuity they're in, so long as they feature the same basic characters and concepts. For instance, when a superhero movie comes out and gets tie-in novels timed to ride on its coattails, the novels are pretty much always in the comics continuity rather than the film continuity. And animated series that are made to capitalize on superhero movies are almost never in the same continuity as the movies, though they may draw on elements from them.

Yeah, I did mean screen story, sorry.
I guess you have a point about the other stuff.

For instance, when a superhero movie comes out and gets tie-in novels timed to ride on its coattails, the novels are pretty much always in the comics continuity rather than the film continuity.

A good example is "Superman, Last Son of Krypton" by Elliot S! Maggin, which coincided with the premiere of "Superman: The Movie". The British/Australian edition had a comic-style art cover, but the US edition had a movie cover, the movie logo and a generous b/w photos insert from the movie.

When "Superman II" came out, the process was repeated with "Superman: Miracle Monday". The story had nothing to do with the plot of the movie sequel, but it had pics from it.

Films III and IV - and "Superman Returns" - got proper novelizations.

^Yes, I'm a proud owner of both of Maggin's Superman novels, and they're among the finest Superman stories ever written (especially Last Son).

Further examples would be the Marvel novels published by Pocket, including the two I wrote, which were purposely scheduled as movie tie-ins but set in the comics universe.
