Upcoming DS9 anniversary segment in the magazine

Sucker bet. Have you seen the Cardassian economy lately? What's the exchange rate on the lek these days? Something like three million leks to the dollar? Pffft.

You know, if you take the time and care to do it right the first time, you don't have to rewrite it. ;)

OK, that's making today officially weird. I'm finding out more about what's happening on these articles from here than from reading my own email!

Anyone who wants to discuss what their articles are about, feel free.

Bob, some comments are coming back to you shortly - been concentrating on the next issue, and major pieces from Wardlimore on what makes a good Starfleet Captain, as well as DRG's Kirk-centric piece.

Issue 8 should hit newsstands early next week

I'll be discussing DS9's use of the larger Trek universe -- using Worf's arrival in season four as the jumping-off point, but also discussing DS9's use of material from other parts of the Trek universe (which, technically, includes the Cardassians and Bajorans).

^ Will you be touching on the depicting of Vulcans in the series? I've always thought that there seemed to be fairly negative portrayals of Vulcans and their system of logic on DS9 (chauvinist crew, serial killer), and wondered if that had to do with the series trying to carve its niche as the darker, more cynical and also far more emotional Trek series.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Don't forget dealing with illegal arms merchants. (This one was classic. The Vulcan out-logic'd by Quark! :rommie:)

I remember DS9's use of Vulcans being used by some to justify ENT's view of Vulcans in the early seasons.

Heck, look at TOS Vulcans. Sarek all but disowned his own son because they disagreed on his career choice. T'Pau was openly scornful of humans, and T'Pring was willing to force her fiance to fight his best friend to the death so she could be with the guy she was having an affair with. And let's not forget that this supposedly enlightened, peaceful civilization still practices a ritual of mortal combat.

The idea that negative portrayals of Vulcans are an invention of ENT or DS9 is based on revisionist history. Over the years, fandom came to portray Vulcans in an increasingly idealized light, and that colored our perceptions of Vulcans in the show itself. But the fact is, Vulcans have always been portrayed as a people capable of deep character flaws, arrogance, intolerance, deviousness, and hypocrisy.

^ What Christopher said. TOS Vulcans were much bigger assholes than Enterprise Vulcans. :)

We saw a lot more of Spock than the full Vulcans, though. Since he was trying to live up to the Vulcan ideal, it was natural for fans to assume that most Vulcans were more like Spock than T'Pring.

^ There's a huge difference between trying to live up to the Vulcan ideal and the Vulcan reality. It was also much easier for Spock to aspire to the Vulcan ideal while serving on a ship that had no Vulcans on it.

Oh, now, that's stretching things, isn't it? The TOS Vulcans didn't bury listening posts under religious sites, launch unprovoked wars, or commit genocide against government dissenters. There may have been an abundance of assholish Vulcans on TOS, but only because they were only ever brought on to be antagonists for Spock, never in a concerted effort to show a developed alien culture.
