Unmanned Russian spacecraft out of control, plunging to Earth

Looks like it's making a unscheduled suborbital descent.

Unmanned Russian spacecraft plunging to Earth, says official

An unmanned Russian cargo spacecraft ferrying supplies to the International Space Station is plunging back to Earth and apparently out of control.

“It has started descending. It has nowhere else to go,” an official familiar with the situation said on condition of anonymity on Wednesday. The official was speaking ahead of an official Russian space agency statement expected later in the day. “It is clear that absolutely uncontrollable reactions have begun.”

It's going to graze the old prison on Alcatraz Island, and then plow into San Fransisco.

:)

Update from ESA. Re-entry is probably less than 24 hours away now, maybe even as soon as this evening.

The team at ESA's Space Debris Office are providing regular reentry estimates to ESA Member States based on analysis of radar tracking data provided by our US partners, enhanced with data from Germany's TIRA tracking radar (operated by Fraunhofer FHR).

As of Thursday morning, 7 May, we are forecasting an uncontrolled reentry by Progress M-27M any time between later in the evening today through to mid-day tomorrow, 8 May.

The current large uncertainty is due to the unpredictability of the drag forces working on the vessel, and is a standard feature of such predictions. Any reports claiming precise re-entry times and locations at this stage are speculative.

Note that the data do appear to indicate that the Progress vessel is experiencing a very fast rotation rate of around one revolution every 1.8 seconds.

According to NASA JSC:
The fall zone of unburned debris in the atmosphere could be anywhere in the range between 52 degrees south and 52 degrees north latitude. Further safety impacts are being assessed.

That's a prediction from last week though. There haven't been newer ones AFAIK, the uncontrolled reentry makes it extremely difficult to project apparently.

Hmmm...looks like it is due to come right (over?)head to where I am.
Well, my Elders always told me I had "space on the brain" when I was little.

The Cold War is Over.
It is Very Cold...In Space.
It is Very Hot...In Re-Entry.

Wish me luck.

Funny, I just watched MI4

Where is the kill switch?

That's a lot of ground. That is basically everything in Western Europe, China, the more populated parts of North America and south until the tip of South America being out of the area. I do notice the most of Russia is not in that area.

If it happens during the night and someone happens to record it then it should look something like this.

This was the controlled re-entry of the Jules Verne ATV breaking up over the South Pacific.

Have to laugh. "satflare"

...and, the heading on my "Progress" screen for tracking is named, "Online Satellite and Flare Tracking"

JJ?
