Universal to come out with "Wheel of Time" movie

Norrin Radd

Vice Admiral
I think this could work. However...while I normally like it when the movie stays as true to the books as possible, not in this case; these movies need to leave out all the fat. That's the series' fatal flaw: lack of editing. I managed to finish book 8 before I realized it was going nowhere and abandoned ship.

I like the genre, and keep trying to get into that series, but I'm about 2 books in, and i kept putting book 2 down. It is so f'ing slow, the names are all about the same, and it just doesn't go anywhere (but describes the fuck out it anyway).

Far more excited about the Sword of Truth tv series at the moment. Wheel of time just doesn't do it for me. Hell, I'd rather even see a Shannara movie or series, that one (while derivitave of LOTR at first) is a far more entertaining franchise...

I think it should be possible to make good films out of the books, but with a lot of editing. And even then there should be a number of films, especially to cover the earlier books (especially The Eye of the World and The Dragon Reborn, and The Great Hunt to a lesser extent), which each have a very clear structure leading up to a climax and a setup for the next book, like a film almost.

The Wheel of Time series is something of a guilty pleasure for me. It's what first got me into reading fantasy, and the world that Jordan created still interests me. It's not perfect, far from it, but a number of the characters could be made appealing for a theatre-going crowd, and I'd imagine that some scenes could look stunning.

As cool as an Eye of the World movie might be, I would prefer a series based off the books as the material is far too big for a movie. The biggest plus in having a series compared to a movie would be a more consistent design of the world, which is one of the most important things in a Wheel of Time.

I don't want it to be like the Harry Potter movies where the design and look of things change every other movie. I think it's okay for Harry Potter because the books are so separated by school years, whereas the Wheel of Time should seem like a continuous story, but it's too long of story to give it a Lord of the Rings treatment.

The time span of the series would make it hard to do live action movies. The series covers about three years of time, and a number of the lead roles start out very young.

Keeping a cast around long enough to do twelve books would be pretty much impossible, not to mention that movie viewers would not have the patience to keep track of such a long and detailed (albeit boring and tedious at times) plot.

We will all die of old age before they finish making all the WOT movies.

That's why I think a tv series would be better, because then you could do 1-2 books a season, and you could keep people interested in a long, complicated plot like the Wheel of Time, and it is not as if the show would require that much computer effects, especially in the early seasons so I think it could work on a tv budget.

I'm not sure how they are going to make those huge books into the movie.

I tried reading the first one but I just couldn't finish it.

I don't really see the movie being successful enough to sustain the length and number of movies needed to actually tell the story. Although the 'fat' comment means you can cut a helluva lot out of the movies from the books.

Just don't cut out Mat Cauthon stuff since he's the best part of the books. Rand is just a whiny little emo dude.

hmm I wonder how his romantic relationship would make it to the film...

Although it would be several in before it gets juicy.

This could go very well or very poorly. That said, a lot of the "fat" is descriptive stuff and inner turmoil etc. that lends itself to a film adaptation (essentially providing every detail for the production design and actors notes) without actually adding to the length of the movie. I actually think film might be a better medium to tell the story in a reasonable amount of time than the books.

I really doubt we'll see the whole series filmed, but those first few books were the best ones anyways, so it could still be a good handfull of movies.

When I was reading the series in highschool, I always thought I'd make a fairly decent Rand. Still would, though I'll need a wig pretty soon, and to get in slightly better shape. :shifty: I could probably pull off Perrin too with the same caveats.

No one really jumps out at me for casting the main three guys. . . I'd go with unknowns.

I only just heard about this so I thought I would bump the thread with an interview: http://www.dragonmount.com/News/?p=374

I've read the first 8 books and have the rest sitting on my bookshelf. It may be time to reread them all in one go and read the remaining unread novels.

I would rather see that replacement author to finish book series in some satisfying way before seeing a movie..

But I guess it might be made into interesting movie or probably movies.

The final book, A Memory of Light, should be published in late 2009. So it'll be out well before any movie is released.

I wouldn't be to sure on that. Apparently the last book comes in at 675,000 words which is books 6 & 7 put together. There's no way that you can make a book that large apparently so it looks like it will be split into two books.

Also Jordan had problems with Red Eagle and was going to get the rights back for the movies. He thought that the series would be better handled as a mini-series.

And FYI, if you haven't read Sanderson's Mistborn books or Elantris (an entire story in a single book. Which by the way, would make a fantastic movie!), and are at all apprehensive about him taking over WoT, I suggest you check them out. I think he's a very good choice as far as voice and character goes, and that his (relative) brevity will be a nice counter to the rather drawn out nature of the last several WoT novels...

I normally really like these kind of books but I was bored to tears with the 1st book and never finished it. So, not too thrilled to see a movie of it come out though I'll at least rent it when it comes out on DVD.
