Universal Studios Classic Monsters Extended Universe - wuh?

I'm not saying GL was gonna be first off the rank just because it was a DC movie that existed. I'm saying it because that was the plan. You can look it up if you want. Or if you disprove it, that's cool too. I'll change my stance and everything. It'll be amazing.

I did look it up. I didn’t find anything of course because that’s not the case. It’s 100% false. There were no such talks back in 2011. DC’s biggest hits were the Batman and Superman stand-alone franchises back then. DC’s first attempt at a shared cinematic universe is Man of Steel (2013) for better or worse. You can keep believing whatever you want to believe though.

Yes, that's definitely the case. That was the role Angela Bassett's version of Amanda Waller was meant to play. She was going to be the "Nick Fury" character that linked the different films together.

Again no. Does Green Lantern contain such after credits scenes like Marvel’s Nick Fury or Suicide Squad’s Amanda Waller scenes? No. Because it wasn’t planned. The success or failure of GL had nothing to do with it.

What we’re discussing was in 2011. Christopher Nolan had zero interest in a cinematic universe. His Dark Knight (which at that time was just 2 films) wouldn’t have joined. Plans for Superman were also in limbo because Superman Returns wasn’t as successful as Warner had hoped. What kind of a universe would that have been without (clear plans for) DC’s most iconic characters?

One could make a case about Frank Miller’s planned Justice League Mortal being the first attempt at a CU but certainly not for Green Lantern!

I believe they may be referring to Green Lantern, which was WB's first failed (and how!) attempt at kicking off their CU.

Something like that. There have been rough start movies from other studios, that ultimately never went that far. The Justice League movies are fewer and more packed with characters to keep the project simpler, but it's just about managing.

The Dark Universe has kept ditching each movie meant to "start" their story only to try again with the next. And now it looks like they've given up.

The Monster Mash era of movies was an extremely haphazard way of having actors and characters shared across Universals productions but they were not serialised, and certainly not taken seriously. They weren't building anything greater than the sum of what was already on screen and had no end goal. Just encouraging the 30's and 40's ticket sales with people getting to see more than one monster for their money.

What was the first one? I know he's worked on a couple of franchises from other creators, like Transformers and Kelvin Trek, but as far as I know, Dark Universe was the first one he was in charge of.

As for where he goes next, he's already got a bunch of different TV shows that he/Secret Hideout produces, including Discovery. So he could just stick to TV.
The article I read on IGN specifically said that he was only going to be focusing on his TV stuff

That was what I've heard. Pretty much every single thing I've ever read about GL has talked about how it was meant to be the start of a DC shared universe. This is the first I've ever come across someone saying that it wasn't.
As for the apparent end of the Dark Universe, I'm not at all surprised. I've pretty much been expecting this announcement since The Mummy bombed as hard as it did. The IGN article did say they might still make the movies, but they would not be connected to each other now.

They should've approached them as individual movies first, maybe with just a few Easter eggs to allow for future connections. It's the films that try too hard to set up a shared universe that tend to do the most poorly, e.g. The Mummy or The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Or Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman, for that matter, although in that case they didn't kill the franchise.

People have been making this false claim that Green Lantern was supposed to be the start of a DC shared universe for two pages now and none have produced an actual link or post that confirms it.

If it was such a widespread rumor or common knowledge surely you’d find an actual article from 2011 that confirms it by now.

Go ahead. I’ll be waiting.

The article is from 2013, but it summarizes the 2011 Flash script, written after Green Lantern had begun filming, but before it came out. It has a post-credits stinger where Barry Allen and Hal Jordan meet.

And that script was loosely the basis for season one of The CW's The Flash, also from Berlanti & Guggenheim.
