a commenter mentioned:
But seriously, why make it 3D when the chances of it going straight-to-tape are almost 100%?

the last film did go direct-to-DVD in the US market.

Maybe there is hope that Lundgren's turn in Expendables could make it more viable as a theatrical release? Maybe? I'm grasping here.

This is some creative maths I think, there are already 5 Universal Soldier films, it's just they like to pretend that 2 of them don't exist.

Really, they should be pretending that they never made any of them at all.

Those two Universal Soldier straight-to-DVD "sequels" with different actors playing the roles were made by a different studio.

yep. 5 films.
Two of them were 'made-for-TV movies': Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms and Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business. According to wikipedia:
Non Canon
The following movies were removed from the canon of Universal Soldier films when Van Damme returned to the franchise
:
Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms & Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business.
In 1999, a theatrical sequel, once again starring Van Damme, Universal Soldier: The Return was produced, which essentially ignored the plotline of the direct-to-video sequels entirely.
It should be noted that Universal Soldier: Regeneration ignores the events of Universal Soldier: The Return and reinvents the series by writing it off the canonical fictional timeline, and following the psychological tracks of the original movie.
well if you can count the schlock the Asylum put out hoping no one would notice:
Universal Soldiers (2007) running 85 minutes. It would sort of be 6.

Yeah that company known for:
Titanic 2 (2010) (V)
War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave (2008) (V)
The Day the Earth Stopped (2008) (V)
Transmorphers (2007) (V)
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009) (V)

Well let's be honest
Star Trek (2009) aka "Star Trek: The Future Begins" - Malaysia (English title)
aka "Star Trek: The Beginning" - Republic of Korea
is a reboot and is not necessarily recognizing the title ordering of the previous 10 Star Trek feature films and continuing as a sequel #.
