LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Universal Studios, once Hollywood's top backer of the doomed HD DVD video format, will soon release all its new videos on the victorious Blu-ray rival at the same time as its standard DVDs.

The studio is set to announce Thursday that the program will kick off in the summer with the recent box office flop "Doomsday."

Universal's Blu-ray strategy includes plans to release about 40 titles in the second half of the year.

Among them are the studio's five big feature films of the summer, including "The Incredible Hulk," with Edward Norton, William Hurt and Liv Tyler; "Wanted," an action thriller starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie; "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"; "Mamma Mia," the adaptation of the musical starring Meryl Streep; and the sequel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," with Brendan Fraser and Jet Li.

Universal officially will enter the Blu-ray market July 22 with a trio of films from its "Mummy" action-adventure franchise: "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," both starring Fraser, and the spinoff "The Scorpion King," with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Also planned for domestic Blu-ray before the year is up are the catalog titles "American Gangster," "Knocked Up," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Miami Vice," "End of Days," "U-571" and "Land of the Dead," among others.

Universal had been HD DVD's biggest studio backer ever since the next-generation optical disc format came to market in April 2006. But when Toshiba pulled the plug on the format in February, the studio wasted no time switching its allegiance to Sony's Blu-ray.

I expect Paramount to release a similar announcement soon. Interesting that Universal has decided to launch with the mummy movies instead of Bourne.

I would think Paramount could start by releasing the movies they pulled from Blu-Ray at the last second when they went HD-DVD-only.

I read about this earlier, awesome news. :D Now they just gotta release Serenity, Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick on Blu. :D And yay, I'll finally be able to pick up Miami Vice in HD.

Cool. I plan on picking up a Blu-Ray player soon. Thank goodness I waited until the war was over, otherwise I'd be stuck with HD-DVD.

Another very good piece of new for you all Blu Heroes fans. Universal will release Seasons 1 and 2 on Blu-ray as soon as August 26th.

Source.

C'mon Paramount where are you guys at?

Hell yeah. Can't wait for the classic monster series to arrive.

Until the players and discs come down in price a lot I'm not interested. DVD is still plenty good.

Land of the Dead? I like Romero and everything, but why not instead release the remake of Dawn of the Dead on blu-ray. It would certainly be more amazing (but then again, the makeup might not stand up to HD format :().

If enough Blu-Ray titles I'm waiting for were available, I'd buy a PS3 for them and the apparent impressiveness of its games.

Well finally Paramount has officially joined the Blu-Ray train with this press release announcing their release plans.

May 20 --> Bee Movie, Face/Off (I am getting this one), and Next.
June 3 --> Cloverfield, There Will Be Blood, and Spiderwick Chronicles.

Also the Blades of Glory which was finished and ready for shipping when Paramount jumped ship last August will also be released on May 20.

^ What I really want on Blu-ray (from Paramount) is Transformers. I'd put Face/Off on the list as well, but I already own it (it's been out in Europe for a while).

Also I forgot to mention that these additional titles that were discontinued when Parmount did the switch will now be re-issued by Paramount starting from May 20.

Aeon Flux
Babel
Black Snake Moan
Coming to America
Disturbia
Dreamgirls
Sky Captain and the World Of Tomorrow
Sleepy Hollow
Trading Places
The Untouchables
The Warriors
We Were Soldiers
World Trade Center

I don't see Transformers coming out until Fall.

From Universal I'm looking forward to American Gangster and Knocked Up, and Cloverfield from Paramount. :) I want Transformers too!
